    • Legally it is only an actual war if one or other side declares it as such. The USA is treating it as a criminal case against Maduro and Venezuela is remaining silent on the topic. The UN is pretty much toothless and as a consequence it is heading the same way as the old League of Nations. Even if in the unlikely event of it authorising an action, which has to be by the Security Council acting unanimously, action itself will only occur should one or more national governments commit resources to effecting it. Although it has had it's occasional successes they are more moral than practical. Often stopping well short of even endorsing any action being taken beyond a wagging finger. So intervention in Korea was sanctioned by the Security council unanimously only because Russia didn't attend and Communist China wasn't at that time a member. Even so the military forces were provided by the US, UK, etc. And the outcome has been a 70 year stalemate because it suited Communist China. Not the UN. And it was the moral 'success' of the UN in 1948 in overulling British attempts to stem the flood of Jewish/Zionist illigal immigration to Mandate Palestine (and the accompanying, mainly Jewish, terrorism) that led the Britain handing the mess to the UN. And here we are 78 years later and the region is still a mess. Good job UN. And where was UN action when Maduro was corrupting and terrorising Venezuela? Or when he was massing forces on the border with Guyana and threatening to take something like 70% of Guyanan territory by force? I'm not expressing any kind of support for either side there. Just the situation as I see it. And in terms of UN effectiveness as the Venezuelans, US and other govenments of various hues are also increasingly seeing it.
    • My Spitfire 1500 has a slightly customised wiring loom, but where possible I stick to standard colours. Brown = live Purple = fused live White = live on ignition Green = fused live on ignition Etc.  I'm about to add some additional relays for things like a fuel pump and some other higher wattage items - is there any standard colour for a "fused live on ignition - relay switched" in later Triumph/Leyland models? I'm thinking I'll go with something like green with a tracer and white with a tracer depending on fused/unfused.
    • Hadn't heard about the Inverness works. Last time I was in Inverness it was just to get a replacement battery for the Scimitar! Need a proper visit next time I'm back home.  As for your part of the world, it gets pretty wild up there. My parents met on Unst in the 1950s when he was at the RAF radar station and she was a teacher. Not long after they left the radar got blown into the sea in a storm. Add a bit of glaciation!! Yes, but they were fossilised shells John. Pretty sure the people carrying out the excavations at Inverness can tell the difference between an 8000 year old shell and a fossil . However I was a project engineer installing a high pressure gas line along the south shore of the Firth of Forth and a factor in chosing the route was making sure we avoided the many shell middens in that area. These are piles of oyster and other edible mollusc shells, deposited by the local inhabitants over thousands of years from late stone age into the Pictish era.
    • Careful!     Charles Darwin, on his round-the-world voyage on the Beagle, noted seeing seashells on the tops of the Andes mountains in South America, and now we know of many such fossils, formed on the sea bed but lifted far above sea level by geology over millions of years.    John
    • There are reports over the last few days that there has been  lots of military flights coming into US bases in the UK, much more than normal,  so it looks like he is planning something else. Could be Iran next.... interesting comment on R4 this morning that this is all about AI. AI needs reliable electricity so you either need nuclear power, but that takes years to build the capacity or you use fossil fuels....
    • Wrong ..The Donald couldn't give a damn about America or Americans in general. This is all about enriching the accounts of those wealthy who gave to his campaign
    • Trump mentioneD OIL 12 times during his rambling speach but never mentioned DEMOCRACY or THE PEOPLE OF VENEZUELA ONCE
    • I wonder, with all the incredible leaders America has see assasinated, how is it that this self centered egotistalical creature is still alive. Something very wrong in this world
    • Yes it is rather fascinating Colin. The recent works at Inverness Castle uncovered remains (sea shells) that are believed to have been deposited in that tsunami. Along the coast here in Caithness it is not uncommon for chunks of rock to be broken off from the cliffs during storms and for quite sizeable fish to be deposited well from the sea. Dunnet Head and Hoy were once connected but retreating glacier movement at the end of the last Ice Age carved a channel, namely the Pentland Firth, through the relatively soft red sandstone. This movement also deposited rocks and shells from much further east along the coasts.   Ian
