Some time ago I was contacted by christian Gurney of mecum auctioneer in the USA about using some film of my dads in a promotion video.

I said yes for a charity donation.

This is the video

my question to you is

how much will it sell for ?!

Great film, Hamish. Pity they couldn't manage a credit for the source at the end, given what the auctioneer's premium will be on this...

I'd say it wil go for well north of $50m. Looking at what is being paid for cars with provenance now, it could be $70m.

Excellent Hamish. You are part of quite a special family.

The 250 GTO is one of the best looking Ferraris in my opinion. Nice to see a Ferrari that isn't red (gets very boring). Generally not a fan of white for cars but it really suits this one.

The video is interesting but the thing that got me is that there is really nothing much about the car itself. It's pretty obvious that the market for this type of vehicle is someone who 'likes' cars but is in reality more interested in them as an investment rather than for driving.

Much in the same way as they would 'like' a property on 57th Street in New York but wouldn't actually live there.

As for value? The last/only time I saw a 250 GTO in the flesh outside a museum was at a sprint event at Knockhill in the late 1980s (where there was also a Lancia Stratos!).

At that time one had just been sold for £1.5 million. So I have no reason to doubt Paul's estimate.

He does like to drive them you can tell that even from the short clip, no kid gloves and a good heavy right foot. Good on him:bow:

I am surprised that it went for "only" $35m, but maybe it's a reflection of the much-reported decline in classics' sales prices...

Nice to see.

Was reading something about this recently. Thought is that it's about demographics. The 'Nick Mason' era rich guys who remember this high end exotica from their youth are basically dying off which is deflating demand for the real high end cars

In the Mallory Park paddock, i found myself next to a guy driving a Ferrari. NOT a GTO!

Over lunchtime i complimented him on his devotion to motosport, to drive what was a valuable if not stratospheric car.    He explained that he had lusted after a Ferrari since childhood, but by the time he could afford one  he couldn't afford the road insurance!

I was glad he wasn't in my race!

Yes i was way out

when i was first approached about the video I thought double ($70m) would be about right.
so its a bargain !!!!

what is incredible is the $3.5m commission and taxes.

If he moves it to another country, that might look like chickenfeed. In the extremely unlikely event that Mr Lee decided to foresake the California sunshine and take up residence in not-quite-so-sunny PL, the Fezzer would attract 18.6% excise, 10% duty and, to add insult to injury, cars from outside the US are also subject to 23% VAT. So roughly another $20m.

I have to add my Ferrari story. We used to live above my father TV shop next to a garage in Keston, Kent.
the family that ran the garage were into cars in a big way (see pics below) and my father, uncle and grandfather were marshals at Brands hatch. happy memories of Boxing day racing at Brands...

One day the was a Ferrari dumped at the garage, the story being that it was being tested by the motoring correspondent of the Daily Telegraph but the car lost the  clutch and was left at the garage. The car was a  1959 Ferrari 250 GT Competizione Alloy Berlinett I managed to sit in the car and someone took my photo! I still have the stick out ears!

the car was beautiful and I researched the car found that it  ended up in the USA.

The garage and owners used to close the garage in the evening  and then race go carts around the pumps.. At the weekends there friends would meet up at the garage and talk cars...

that is the Croydon road just after the junction with Westham road. No traffic and now looks very different now.

Mike,

Are you sure you don't have a double, using the name Alfred E. Neuman, of MAD magazine?

That's a brilliant set of photographs Mike.

And just ignore those two :P

We could almost have been twins at that age.

Although obviously a dodgy bunch when you need an armed Northumberland Fusilier to keep order on the school bus. :ninja:

I had the same issues as a kid. And mum always went for a "crew cut" at the barber to extend the length of time to the next hair cut.

Meaning they really stuck out for about 2-3 weeks.

And kids that age can be brutal for teasing...

Me too. Never liked getting a haircut…..

Hello All

When my my mother took me for the scalping I would not let the barber use the electric clippers he had to get the old hand clippers out!(I bet that peed him off?)

There was one of those in a box of "inexpensive" scissors I bought from Amazon. But quite small. I think meant for cutting threads when sewing.

Ah, but has it ended? Especially now that it has veered towards discussing thread drift, a topic with the potential for much debate.

Or not.

Well yes. Thread drift seems a bit like a collective stream of concious thing. Like when you start thinking about new shoes and end up wondering which cake you like best. For example...
