Nick Jones Posted May 8 Posted May 8 Sounds rather trying! Haven’t heard anything good about these brand new racks, only not good. I’ll stick with rebuilding the OE ones as long as I can! Yes, bolt length is critical. Also note that on both of mine it was necessary to open out the bolt holes to allow the clamp to close up enough to properly grip the splined. Manifested as a little bit of rotational play which was hard to find. Yes, that J-type OD behaviour does sound like the solenoid valve. I’ve read that they can be dismantled, cleaned and o-rings renewed. Trust you get some quality driving time in before needing to lay spanner’s on the wee beastie again!
rogerguzzi Posted May 8 Posted May 8 Hello All Yes, that J-type OD behaviour does sound like the solenoid valve. I’ve read that they can be dismantled, cleaned and o-rings renewed. It is not a difficult job just the VERY small circlip to remove(best to get some new ones I think a metric size fits if memory is correct?) I have done a couple. Plus getting good o/rings but the O/D repair people do them (there was a Man on the TR site who bought lots and was suppling the to members for pence!) Roger

Why do steering shafts have these problems. The steering shaft rubber doughnut clamps on the 4/4A have the same problem. The original slice through the body does not go far enough and this stops the clamp action working with a used splined shaft. I have pics if you need them. Roger

Is this being controlled by a Raspberry Pi or similar? Steering rack business is very annoying, I wonder if it would have ever freed off or if the supplier was just chancing their arm. I'm not familiar enough with steering racks to know if it's plausible

Not a long life from what I’ve read. 1

mpbarrett Posted May 11 Author Posted May 11 Replacement solenoid has fixed the problem, OD now working nicely. But yesterday friend mk3 spit had problems with his D type OD solenoid, wire broken off inside cover, resoldered ( everyone has a gas powered soldering iron in there tool kit..). But is now buzzing and holding coil not holding in. Will try adjusting it this morning. The fun of taking old triumphs on a round trip!
Nick Jones Posted May 11 Posted May 11 Something to do with the switch between the main coil and holding coil.. or maybe the holding coil itself. Just possibly the adjustment is allowing the plunger to pass the break point but not far enough to allow the holding coil to grab…,

So driving without OD ok round the Welsh hills not so much fun on the way home. Gas powered miniature iron, use a catalyst to heat the tip very useful tool!
mpbarrett Posted May 12 Author Posted May 12 The adventure continues. Lose of gears just before heading downhill to a ford... Bolt, nut and bushing fell out but stayed on the top of the gearbox! Gear box cover removed and put together again and made sure bolt was tight. My mistake as I built it.. All back together, getting used to taking gearbox cover off.

Escadrille Ecosse Posted May 12 Posted May 12 Annoying but also fortunate. And while frustrating to have your drive in such lovely weather interrupted, would have been a lot less pleasant in the pissing rain, at night.... 2

Home today via Fitchetts to pick up a new D type solenoid for the spit. Been a great run but so many slow drivers who seem to think the 20MPH limit applies to all roads in Wales... Speed cameras vans and many many police cars around Snowden on the Sunday, but the weekend and sunny weather brings people out. Only seen one other Triumph during the whole trip a rather nice TR6 coming out of Anglesey but lots of Morgans? Mike 2
mpbarrett Posted May 14 Author Posted May 14 All safely home. The visit to Fitchetts was interesting so much original stock brought when the dealers and BL were selling off the spare stock. they also have the moulds to press new panels. So if you need a part for your triumph worth a phone call or see there EBay listings. They dont have a full web site you have to call and speak to a real human (sometimes grumpy). trying to sort dead solenoid. Mk3 spitfire, very original, my Herald 1500, Toby's hurricane with Ford Zetec engine and gearbox, Herald 1200 body on a 2l vitesse chassis. 4 triumph owners having fun in Wales. outside Fitchetts, all the green warehouses are full of original Triumph bits

Nice visit too. Didn't realise Fitchetts had that much stuff! Good that someone took the effort. Photo links not working except that last one. Some interesting cars with you. But I like the the descriptions in the links "May be an image of 5 people and lake"
mpbarrett Posted May 15 Author Posted May 15 I wonder if its put in links rather than copies of the images, will try updating later.

Looks like a great trip - photos are showing up OK for me / now. On Morgans, I see them quite often trucking along the motorways in pairs or threes. More often than any other classic marque in the wild at least. Makes me think they must be a fairly active bunch. 23 hours ago, mpbarrett said: you have to call and speak to a real human (sometimes grumpy) have experienced that. Very helpful though, I don't mind that sort of service.
mpbarrett Posted June 29 Author Posted June 29 since I fitted the EFI to the herald it has been very very reliable. Only time it let me done was in March this year when the coolant temp sensor failed even then it carried on running.... But recently it has been running a bit rich and on Tuesday I went to Ely to get some bits for the grandsons bike I was repairing (lots of bike shops in Cambridge but easier to go north to Ely). Got the bits back to the car and it would not start. Took plugs out very sooty, I had noticed it was running very rich. Eventually got it going by giving it full throttle and it started.... Had a play today and noticed a few of the settings in the controller were wrong, the EGO correction was set to use the Authority table, I am sure I have never set it to use this and had never setup the Authority table! Also the CLT setting were wrong and it thought the temp was less than 50C after a run on a hot day, it was closer to 90C. Need to recalibrate the sensor. Don't quite understand but I did change my PC (very old Acer portable to a new MS Windows 11 portable) a few weeks ago, new version of the MS software installed but transferred all the Mega squirt files across to the new pc but some of the settings seem to have been corrupted between the new PC and the Megasquirt controller.... I thought I had done it controller to PC but now I am not sure........!!. Its not helped by the new PC trying to store every thing onto the cloud, the Documents folder now points to the cloud rather than the local disk, not helpful when you have no internet access! all a bit frustrating. Mike
JohnD Posted June 30 Posted June 30 Nothing about your EFI, Mike, but when I git my desktop ten years ago, I thought to think ahead - hard disk with a TERABYTE of memory. A TERABYTE?!? I can remember the Sinclair with one K, and worked gir ages on a BBC Micro with 64K! That will be enough, I thought, and it is, it only a third full, but new versions of Windows slow it down, and as you say it expects me to store new files on the Cloud. Foresight often isn't! John
rogerguzzi Posted June 30 Posted June 30 Hello Mike If you still have the old laptop I would use that and all your settings will be there unless you wiped them? Roger

This is very annoying. All changeable in the file settings but still just a faff. And occasionally a major OS update points things back to the cloud again. The assumption that we're all instantly connected to a high speed data link at all times is just effing arrogant. Bah humbug. Anyhoo. Go with Roger's suggestion if you can to recover things.

Roger cleaned and given away... I 'thought' I had copied everything across to the new PC... I am very careful about backing stuff up and keeping copies on the PC, NAS box, NAS box backed up to USB disk and USB disk put into shed etc... I might go back to an old backup (plenty from since 2018 when I first fitted the EFI), and then start from there. I will do an in situ calibration of the temp sensor today and get that working. Its surprising critical to EFI software, nothing seems to work properly unless you have a good accurate temperature reading! Changing the default locations for the Document folder is much more difficult than it was before Windows 11..... I could start a separate rant about the 'improvements' put into Windows11.. mike
