In contrast, I have just finished a very NOT bollocks weekend, hosting my children and their families, nine of us.

They all came so that we could go to the the Duke's Theatre Lancaster Play in the Park.  This year with no lack of ambition, it's "Around the World in Eighty Days".  With scenes in India, America and on the High Seas, when asked afterwards which bits they liked best, said, "All of it!"

That plus two 8yo boys racketing around the house, this time having chosen to print out wanted notices for criminal cats (???) and play in the race car, "Grandpa, be a policeman!" And two 4-5 yo's with as much energy, I'm now collapsed!

GREAT weekend!  Love it!

John

We have had the grandchildren this week and agree its completely knackering, I fully understand why you have children when you are young!
They found  my engine crane in the garage (I was using it to lift a OD gearbox onto a workbench), they thought this was great and spent ages lifting stuff up and down. They then wanted to use the garage tools to make a wooden bed for a toy bunny which I helped them do.

We have had a lovely time with them, they are only 5 and 8 once and seem to grow so quickly we have to enjoy it while we can.

Yesterday…. At work. Toy car amongst modern behemoths.

Honey I shrunk the........that’s just menta:blink: why do they need to be so huge.

When we were kids my parents had a herald estate, we’d go on camping hols, two adults 14 and 11 year olds Great Dane and camping gear. Think the two tents and assorted gear went on roof rack. It was cosey and fragrant :ninja: especially the dog.

Yeah…. Remember all 5 of us driving from London to northern Scotland in a Herald saloon. Long day…. We (the kids) we’re fairly small then.

Later on all five of us would often go camping in a Mk3 Cortina saloon. That was a very full car. We even spent the night in it once in no man’s land between the border posts of Zambia and Tanzania. That was a long night. Probably should have paid the bribe…..

They don't.. of course

I was up north at the house doing some surveying (sorting land registry issues). Weather was a bit showery but I also managed a couple of very decent rides on the bike.  And tried out our new access gate. Needs a bit of work where it joins the track as the second attempt separated the joint on the left exhaust pipe

And I filled up with petrol at the local garage before I left. This was to full from a little more that a quarter of a tank. Jeez!

Did a little shy of 400 miles, with a fair bit of give and take on the smaller roads and got a little under 28mpg overall. Which I thought was pretty decent.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been back a couple of days now but last Monday I was up at Croabh Haven to a pal's yacht which the three of us sailed back to his winter mooring at Fairlie.

Been a long time since I have done any offshore sailing so I was very much looking forward to it.

Down to Crinan and through the canal to Ardrishaig and Tarbert. Then down Loch Fyne (of herring fame) and back up past Tignabruaich and through the Kyles of Bute. South past Rothesay, with an overnight at the Holy Loch (where the US used to keep their nuclear subs). Then as man three lives on the Rosneath peninsula we sailed over to drop him off before heading down past Largs to Fairlie.

Superb weather and the West Coast was as stunning as ever

Looking up the Clyde estuary to Loch Long and the Arrochar Alps in the distance. What a stunning entry/departure point.

Nice boat that Hamish. Spinnaker out

Crinan was built as a ship canal for the coastal trade around the West Coast - as imortalised in Para Handy and the Vital Spark - to avoid the extremely long and somewhat exposed route round the Mull of Kintyre. So it has the locks and depth to take the bigger 'outside' puffers that could get out into the Minch and the Outer Hebrides. My pals boat is a 36' and you'll fit four of them in the Crinnan locks. They are very big if you are used to narrowboat canal locks!

I went to see the new Top Gun movie the other night, at the Duke's "Sunset Screening", open air in the Park- fun!  Amazing flying sequences, natch.   How do they do that?    Cruise, famously, "does his own stunts", but flying an F-35?   Do they superimpose his face in another's helmet?

Anyway, and unexpectedly, there is a sailing scene!   He's out with a girlfriend, who instructs him to pull that rope - Afterburner on!  and the spinnaker goes up.    Less realistic than the flying, but then what do I know of flying a jet fighter?

No life jackets!  Tut!

The red rope. Difficult to see but looks like it is the traveller for the the jib sheet, not anything to do with the spinnaker as that isn't set yet and anyway it is set on the opposite beam when you see Mr Cruise hauling it up later.

However when the spinnaker fills running downwind there is a very definite 'afterburner effect'

They are American, and like motorbike helmets lifejackets are for wimps...

Yes, Mr.Cruise rides his motorbike in the film, as he did in the original, in donor mode.

The film is an awful example of American foreign policy bombast (Excuse me, any cousins reading this) but is full of exciting flying.      Worth a  visit, IMHO.

No doubt the throttle has become unhooked from the governor.....

Nick, you are not only a steely-eyed engineering man, but you are an ace diagnostician!

Today, collected mower from the shop I bought it from.  What was the problem?  "Governor spring".

Was it broken?  No, it was missing.  What??? Yes, it happens.  Do you mow under bushes, the branches can reach in and hook it out.   Well, I don't, but surely a design fault somewhere.

Anyway, I know who to call, and it's not Ghostbusters!
