thebrookster
Well, I do occasionally get out and venture into the local hills. Not often, as I am not a fan of hill-climbing in anything other than good weather (I mean, why the hell would you want to go to all the effort of climbing a hill to not even see anything at the top??). So yesterday was a rather cold ascent of Ben Arthur, otherwise known as The Cobbler. Phil

Hamish
Great views and you can’t beat taking the dogs on an adventure like that.
Nick Jones
Nice! Worth the climb I'd say. Seems you are spoiled for choice locally. Seems that most parts of the British Isles did better for weather than we did today. Been grey and murky and cold here all day. Walked 9 miles this morning. It was alot flatter than yours but no worthwhile views. Don't suppose it drained the batteries on the dogs by more than 1/4..........?

Escadrille Ecosse
It is a great walk that Hamish. The first bit up from the loch is a bit of a killer although since the path was improved not quite so bad. Last time I was up that way heading for Bienn Ime it was a bit snowy and we had to give up past the shelter stone as it was almost up to our bo££ocks! Beautiful pictures. Good job
thebrookster
Dogs were down to about 2/3's capacity lol. Turns out Ghyll (the mostly black one) is bloody useless at scrambling, had to give him a shove several times! The other dog, Skye, had no problems. 34 minutes ago, Escadrille Ecosse said: It is a great walk that Hamish. We avoided the bottom section of that path by dint starting my from Ardgartan, round the corner! They have started charging £1 an hour for the carparks at Arrocher.......... Only adds maybe 40mins to walk. We came down the ridge rather than the main path, rather fortuitous as we met a couple who we had passed on the way up who were nicely lost, so guided them down the ridge and pointed them to rejoin the main path at the dam whilst we continued down the forest along a very wet and muddy path! Had some rather soggy feet by the end. Certainly feeling it today, gave some muscles I had forgotten about a good workout, but then I did set a fast pace. Total time was four hours, however I reckon we lost half an hour guiding the two misplaced walkers, so not too bad. Phil
Escadrille Ecosse
That sounds like a 'proper' day out when you get to wearing the dogs out And a bit of mountain rescue thrown in! Probably deserve a day with the feet up.
thebrookster
After being informed by herself who must be obeyed that we needed to do a longer walk together (she had the day off today), we decided to visit another of the local Corbett's, Ben Donich @847m. Nice day for a walk, albeit a shortish one. Garmin informs me we covered 4.9miles in 2.5 hours (we stopped to take in the view a few times) and a total of 652m ascent/descent. Legs are pleasantly tired, but not destroyed so that also counts as a win in my book

mpbarrett
Very nice. I am in Wales, wife busy at the weekend going to Wonderwool buying lots of wool and fleeces. She is a litter and spinner. I went for a wander up the hills. Lovely but hard on my Fen legs. Few of camp site from the hills came off the hills and found a nice pub for a pint before strolling back to the campsite
mpbarrett
Quick plug for OS maps, there is s great OS app that lets you download all the OS maps for an area and then can track your route. See last image. Doesn't need phone signal just GPS. Cost is a yearly subscription but worth the cost if you enjoy walking, cycling.
Escadrille Ecosse
Another cracking view there. And I like the 'proper' maps. Might take a look at the OS site.

Mike, a wander and a pint does sound very appealing, I have to choose carefully up in this neck of the woods to achieve that! I seem to remember I have an app that does the OS maps. The image I used above is simply the GPS track from my watch in the Garmin App, I guess I could use it for navigation but I have never bothered working out how? I'll be honest, I'm still pretty old school, so this is (part of) my main "app":

Beats mine hands down. I just like looking at maps. Although I kept a couple of these still from a long time ago....
Nick Jones
Do love a map. Especially OS maps. Our special family talent is booking holiday rentals on the edge of two or 3 maps, which, while it gives an excuse to buy more maps…. can get rather costly! JohnD
"An app that does OS maps" The bane of Mountain Rescue Services, everywhere! Not you, Phil, obviously, or others above, but people seem to think that the tiny screen will let them wander anywhere, and know where they have got to, which requires appreciation of the surrounding terrain, and some visual triangulation. You can't do that on a mobile! My favourite, from Landale MRS's annual report is "Where are you, with your broken ankle?" "Next to a stone wall". thebrookster
Just to add to the map envy, here's another couple of collections hiding round the house! 7 hours ago, Nick Jones said: Our special family talent is booking holiday rentals on the edge of two or 3 maps, which, while it gives an excuse to buy more maps…. can get rather costly! Believe me Nick, it doesn't matter where we go, it always appears to be an area we don't have a map for. Which given we have several dozen, is quite something! mpbarrett
I could put up my pile of OS maps as well... If you buy a new one it has a code so the map can be downloaded to the app for free. But the OS map on the phone with GPS does work very well. Shame most the pubs on OS maps are closed now mike
