Aaron's Spitfire

Recommended Posts

Well, today Emma "inspected" the Spitfire, and I took her for a spin in it. She approves! :D

Apparently it's "cute". No it isn't :P

Got it very sideways in the school carpark, gravel's a bit grip-less! It's amazingly loud, as in stupidly so, when I put my foot down I couldn't hear Emma at all :P

Also discovered that Spitfire seats have feck all lateral support. So if you go round a tight left hander, your passenger slides across into you.

Went round lots of left hand corners today....! ;)

Yes that is a problem in Spitfires, best to go spread eagle over any surface on the early models but avoid the boot on the Mk4-5.

This might be up your street, a real babe magnet, atleast if you like drunk slappers who drink cheap cider, smoke redband, probably have no idea they are pregnant, who the father is or what day of the week it is.

Spitfire Vs Snow!

Definitely meant to park there. Didn't slide back towards a teacher's car...

Made a bit of progress with the battery tray, not too much, couldn't get the drill bit in enough. Will continue next week!

Helpfully tried to jump start that Land Rover. Gave up when I saw it's battery and just lent my jump leads!

Woke up this morning to both a smashing headache and this:

(Alright, fine, it looks cute :P ).

Once again, cleared all the snow off it, had a lovely lunch (isn't nice when you have a whole school with hardly anyone at it!) then set off home in it. Big slide out of it's parked spot. In fact, the whole journey was mainly large slides and loud noise!

Filled Charlie's mini with fuel... which I then had to pay for, as he hadn't brought any money!

Jaunty angle, party because I got there from a large slide, partly because Charlie hit the side of my car!

DSCF1394-4.jpg70s Style picture?

Bad Spitfire!

It did this:

IMAG1550.jpg

Naughty thing...

Done a bit more mileage in it, it's loosened it's fan belt, so that'll need tightening. Currently sorting out getting my floor pan, it's up in High Wycombe... Dick and I made up a list of what needs to be done but isn't too urgent, and at some point I'll order some parts so I can sort out the rear wheel bearing that was an MoT thing last year, and the rear tie rods. The steering column is (slightly worryingly) not clamped into the rack, it's just sitting there, which is why my steering wheel moves in and out! Dick gave me a bolt to sort that out. We decided that the shoddy welding and crumpled bulkhead all stem from the same crash, which was repaired quite well on the bonnet... Other things we spotted were that the lead from starter motor to solenoid is coming apart quite badly, so we made a new one up, and that the positive battery lead is too short and is beginning to fray. So I'll get a new one of those. He's currently replacing the drop links on his anti-roll bar - and decided that his old ones were miles better than my original ones, so I've got those to fit as well!

Slight rust seeping through on the passenger side rear wheel arch, the paint's chipped off along most of it and it's coming though. I think I might just smear it with vaseline and leave it until we repaint the rear!

I think I've mastered the art of double-de-clutching, I do it for every change now, it's much quicker than waiting for the synchro to catch up!

I got lots of thumbs up as I burbled through Emsworth, it has a silly one way system and I had to use the Spitfire's famously small turning circle several times, much to the delight of onlookers! :P Emsworth also has lots of built up brick buildings, close together.... This exhaust has quite a lovely rasp! (Plus the backfires have returned slightly, if you let off at 5,000 there's a nice crack! :P ).

My exhausts are badly fitted (they were fitted by a company that begins with the 17th letter of the alphabet...)

My alternator (the new one) has had it:

But my spare coil works! :)

I think the car needs a wash:

And this is why the bonnet doesn't close:

..... and life is good!

As you'll know from quantam theory, in many other slightly different but largely similar universes, your bonnet stay doesn't foul, your car has been recently waxed, your alternator is hunky-dorey and Quiller aren't a shit Triumph supplier.

Most of those could be true. One certainly isn't at all possible.

  • 3 weeks later...

Had a nice morning down at the Goodwood Breakfast Club, Emma couldn't come as she was busy, and when I got back she demanded that she had the passenger seat for all the other breakfast clubs :)

Fair enough! :P

Had an interesting moment on the way there, a small amount of understeer turned into a very large amount of oversteer!

I wasn't the only Triumph in attendance:

Although the Vitesse I'd helped tinker up yesterday didn't make it :(

New alternator has arrived, just need to find the time to fit it. And work out how to get that slidey bush to slide....

Also need to get some paint for when I respray it in the summer, and hurry up and get £50 to the bloke who's selling me a floor pan! Then get that welded in, get the whole car up on ramps, and get the exhaust off, refit it in a non-quill... I mean, non-bodged manner. Might have sourced myself an overdrive box and prop, we'll have to see how that pans out. Hard top off, get some 1500 seats, get some fog lamps, halogens and relays. Wire in a radio that's less dangerous and less modern. Oil trunnions.

Should start that in July, after the A2s, then by the end of july it should be pristine... or at least, better than how it is now!
