Aaron's Spitfire

Recommended Posts

Please, Nooooooooooooooo..... There's enough competitiveness (healthy) here already we don't need another contest!

:(:)

Don't know what's happening yet but I'd avoid Boston, Massachusetts and possibly the whole of the New England area. My sympathies are with the city.

Cheers, James.

Aaron. we'll make you welcome in the west if you're inclined. It's a whole different country over here. And I'll cover you for lane changes if required. Old Los Angeles joke if you remember that period.

As for the recent news, we don't yet know what that's about BUT I went to Athens a day or so after the 9-11 attack. People were people, sympathetic and much more clued in to the latest news than I was. It'll be the same in m,ost places you go. People keepin' on being people and marvelling that such evil is so close.

Have a great trip and next time do the West! So much more granduer....

Did y'all miss me?

Here I am, in a Spitfire in Pittsburgh (Gosh, LHD Spitfire's are different, the pedal gap, the offset. And groping the door doesn't change the gear!)

Did various other things too, here's the view from the Empire State Building:

Met this chap:

(Having run up the steps on the wrong art museum previously...)

Played with this beast:

Saw a large spike covered in scaffolding :P

Took a huge train:

Got to Florida, then went up to Minneapolis, then back to Buffalo and then Niagra.

Eclectic gathering :)

Spit looks to be half the height of the Standard

Mk1 R5 is a rare sight these days - which isn't that surprising as the little buggers know how to rust. My bro had one about 25 years ago which I spent many hours welding in an attempt to keep the back wheels on and pointing in the right direction.

Occasionally snippets were put up on the Club Triumph website, although I can't remember which, mainly linked from facebook by other people as the only internet I had was wifi (when available) on my phone.

It was fantastic fun - although I'm no longer great mates with the lad I went with :P

We knew that before we started, but I'd spent sufficient time away from him to forget his random racism, sexism, poor jokes involving the pair, and cyclical conversations :P

In Spitfire news, the head gasket is going, probably should change it over christmas, but the garage is dark and cold :/

The head gasket was changed over Christmas, and I found an awesome little machinists shop near me, who skimmed the head for £20.

Then I changed the valve for less cracked ones, and lapped them in:

Head gasket one (note that this time it's not a super cheap one!)

And, after a good tune by my mate whilst I was on deployment, it runs wonderfully!

Here it is on the ferry, across to the Isle of Wright:

It's racked up a fair few miles over the summer, but since I'm away at uni most of the time, it's being used quite sporadically. Poor thing. Still fires up nicely and drives well, although the engine is definitely past its best - but my low mileage replacement will be getting some work over winter! I've also got a supposedly very good 3 rail gearbox, which will probably go in instead of the synchroless single rail it currently has.

On the way back from Brum we sat in a traffic jam on the M40 for over an hour. And the Spitfire did not enjoy it. In fact, after just two and a half hours of running it'd taken it's oil down from the top of the dipstick to the bottom....

Topped up, and it'd done the same by the time I got home.

Plan?

I never really liked this engine, and I have another, low mileage 1500. So...

Stripped:

Oo...

That's for the oil, right? Right...

Anyway, the crank had to be ground to +020. So much for a cheap rebuild, as that was £117 - over half what I aim to spend in a month on everything combined... Let's not mention this to my girlfriend!

Pistons, while manky:

Were fine, so my mate Matt cleaned the up with his special methods, and I ordered a set of standard rings.

10885288_10204202084066969_4954127571091

The crank has returned, and it'll all be going together after Christmas, I'll be driving the Spitfire up to Matt's, in Norfolk - so if you see a red Spitfire pulling a large cloud of smoke behind it going through London on the 27th, it'll be me...!
