BMW 16v head on A series

Recommended Posts

Seen this kicking around for a while and wondered if anyone had any more details, I have seen a number of cars with the lovely A series engine fitted modded with a BMW head.

Has anyone got any more details of which BMW the head comes from, how difficiult it is to do etc and maybe some pics?

I am assuming its a motorcycle head but I'm not that well informed on bimmer bikes.

Any input appreciated as I have this in mind for a project.

Cheers

Mike

I think 'is doing' would be  a better description but I'm quite sure it will be done on due course.  The tricky bits are done - just needs assembling.  Destined for an A30 (also still to completed) with a type 9 and lsd so should be entertaining......

He's not really a forum person - to much going on to sit a computer, but if anyone has any specific questions want answering I'll try to find out.

Love the sound when that little estate comes on cam...... SUPERB.

Beats the BMW mini offal by miles......

Imagine zooming down some country lane with a sports car, then some loon comes flying past you in a 20 year old mini estate with about 160 brake!!? Brilliant!

I suppose it makes you think about the other old 16V mini conversion from yrs ago...

Like....

Stick a 1300 ford cross flow in it......errr....EXCEPT it gets a 16V Cosworth head....called a BDG/BDH

Pete Baldwin's famous Mini had that......210bhp at 10800rpm, makes an "ordinary" 16V mini look a touch "breathless" eh?  ;D

It used to beat everything in sight, especially as it was ultra light!

Just thinking about some of the smaller cars, and Peter Baldwin's Baby BDA(H) Mini always comes to mind.

Shame that he sold it.

AND

Peter Baldwins Mini was shipped to Japan where I think it now resides in a shopping centre on display. what a waste.

Can you imagine a field like this...Wendy wools was great!!!

  • 11 years later...

Nick Jones' co-driver has finally relented and joined this forum! Said 16 valve A-series is being checked over and fettled ready to be placed back in the A30.

Engine is a 1275 MG Midget, bored to 1380cc and fitted with a BMW K1100RS head. Plan to use the BMW throttle bodies on a Megasquirt ecu. Will report on progress while "furloughed" off work!

cheers, Duncan

This is a problem for classic car racing, in that their performance, even in "Historic" series, has exceeded anything that was possible, in the day.   No original Mini had an engine bigger than 1275cc  - how does the above machine claim any originality?

I'm guilty, I run my Vitesse on 2.5L, and it has rear axle mods to stop the wheels falling off!   It wouldnever pass for Homologation papers, but it is within the regs of the series I race in.     Others who have accepted more stringent Historic rules  have to spend a lot more in preventative maintenance, replacing parts known to fail,  but still others seem to spend vast amounts, sidestepping the regs.
