JohnD
I picked an orange out of my fruit bowl - and found this in it! What sort of insect might it be? See There is an "Orange Dog" butterfly, whose larvae eat orange tree leaves, but that is much bigger and looks like a bird dropping. Any ideas? Nick Jones
Not my area. You could maybe try Google lens? It’s good on plants - not sure about bugs? Don’t want to be finding stuff like that in my fruit bowl, though complete working one preferable to half a one hanging out of your last bite….. JohnD
At least finding a maggot in your orange is better than finding half a maggot. I also posted on the Natural History Museum's Biodiversity page of Facebook. That got the following answers: Maybe it's organic Extra protein Look after it, feed it oranges and it will turn into what it is going to ! Is he saying ‘Hola, dónde estoy?’ While I knew that the NHM is a world authority on wildlife, I didn't know they specialised in snarks, but that's Facebook for you. Tis the world we live in these days. Sorry can't identify the beastie. Never actually seen a maggot in an orange. Although on reflection, that other things than humans eat them shouldn't be a surprise I suppose. Glad you found it before tucking in though. Nick Jones
Mostly I recall mould on rotting oranges. As a child, running somewhat wild in Swaziland, at certain times of year we had a super-abundance of “frot” oranges and a frot-orange war was enormously entertaining if very messy and unpopular with mothers. The trick was finding the ones with enough integrity for a firm launch, yet soft enough to explode on impact….. Best to not hit the houses as very obvious mark left and hard to clean off! I can smell them now….
JohnD
To be fair I have now had a sensible answer, but even a retired NHM staff member can't say what it is. So the orange and the beastie are in a jar - wait and see! John
Hamish
To me it looks more inch worm like, feet at either end and move by extending front part and bringing rear end to fore in in inverted U not really a worm nor maggot but a form of caterpillar to become moth ?!?? my 1/2 penny worth. JohnD
I regret to inform you that this worm is no more! He has ceased to be, has expired and gone to meet its maker! Stiff, bereft of life, etc.etc. Overwhelmed by the obvious fungal infection of the orange (Species, Penicillium??) or just starved, no idea. JohnD
Big? It is colossal, enormous, gigantic, as big as a house. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to this parrot!
