    • Agree on the hotter plugs - though the B5ES doesn’t sound that unexpected for an engine of its type and era. Rings I would say. These engines don’t get much down the guides (unless fitted with an unregulated external rocker feed). Possibly the rings are just stuck - could try some ATF down the bores and leave it a few days. Won’t do any harm - might do some good.
    • Update the car is just off Malaysia  planned on putting the Alvis in first but that may change? It WILL fill the available space!!
    • Oops, I am mixed up indeed. In which case the hotter plugs probably got fitted to help reduce fouling from oil consumption? Will see how bad it is once I finally drive it again. It's odd that it's just one cylinder. More likely rings or guides?
    • Afraid you are the wrong way up here. 5 is hotter than 6 in NGK-speak. That plug looks a lot like #1 from our red Spit. The rest are fine….. It burns epic amounts of oil without smoking or smelling oily and without any heavy breathing either. Most odd.
    • Hello all, Where to start,. Well here I go. The suspension work was a bit more new ground for me, but it worked out ok. Changed the back springs for a set TR6 ones (from a race car) but ended up putting the ones I had in back, TR6 ones were way to short (2.5 PI mk. 2 sedan but not standard , will have to look at the paperwork in the garage for the poundage) and new spring seats, Super Pro, and some seat belt webbing to act as "droop straps"(mounted to top and bottom shock mounts as it has home made telescopic shock conversion with KYB gas shocks from the 2.5 sedan). Will give some measurements when I get down to garage again. Now to the front. Fitted a set of King springs 500 lb. from a certain green TR3A and it has a set of Bilstein shocks from the same car (had to make some droop stops for the front too, angle iron with measured/welded spacer bolted to bumper bracket bolt). Reversed the  bottom wishbones. Regards,Michael.
    • Managed to find a NOS AC YD fuel pump (D=detachable valves), and rebuilt it with a new diaphragm and valves in the hope that they will be more ethanol resistant than the original parts. The pump was just sold as an AC fuel pump, but the arm does appear compatible: Radiator came back after its recore, looking much better, but not ready to fit it yet. Hope the new core lasts 70 years like the last one. Spent some time redoing the fuel line under the car, but actually the original steel line was very solid. I will add a filter near the tank, as I'm not naive enough to believe the tank is clean inside. Started putting things back in the engine bay, fuel pump installed, new fuel line to carburettor, new distributor pedestal installed: Bought a new set of plugs for it, because I noticed that for some reason it had colder plugs fitted (B5ES) so replaced them with B6ES, on removing them I noticed this: I have checked them before, and I swear they all looked acceptable... We'll see, the engine didn't smoke badly when it was running, so I am a bit surprised. Maybe I should start looking at the "new" engine.. It did have some smoke out the valve cap, but given the age of the oil I wasn't that worried. All the other plugs looked fine, just a bit black as it hadn't been on any long drives since moving it to the new house. Refilled up the gearbox with EP90, fitting nice brass hex headed plugs in place of the nasty square head ones. Also, topped up steering box with this stuff as recommended by the Standard Club, rather interesting, think it might be applicable for trunnions?
    • I can once testing is finished next week do a full write up and also port in my triumph r160 guide. I think you might have seen an early copy of the guide Nick.
    • Agree it’s well worthy of a thread of its own and was going to suggest adding to the thread I thought I started on the subject many years ago - except I’ve failed to find that thread
    • Excellent, Sigma! Please mods, can this post be copied, as the start of a new thread, perhaps entitled new way, CV rear axle?   It's so valuable, and buried in a popular thread, difficult to find! John
    • Yes please. I need to do something about my gt6 rotoflex shafts, replaced the doughnuts 3 times in 20 years, and they are on there way out again.  Thanks
