So here I am back in the UK for a brief few days holiday, remind the wife she has a husband sort of thing. Anyway as everyone is well aware the weather has been wonderful which lead me to dig the TR6 out of the garage and give it a lick and a polish and get a few miles in. Below was a quick stop in town before heading out past Cadwell Park and into the wolds for a little spirited slightly naughty fun.

All good so far except on Thursday a potential purchaser is turning up to take a look and assuming he likes it give it a new home. I'm now left secretly thinking/hoping he won't pony up the necessary so I can claim in all innocence I did try to move it on darling etc etc.

The trouble is that with my sensible head on I do know the 6 needs to go really. Since the arrival of Rheumatoid arthritis last year I've found the low speed steering increasingly difficult to deal with as is pouring myself in and out of the car. All very annoying as I've owned the car since 2002 had it fully rebuilt into the rocket ship I always felt it should have been in the first place. And no, there is no way that the 205's, 13" Motolita steering wheel and quick rack are being changed. Oh well if the sale doesn't go through there's always this for the steering issue and perhaps I'll need to figure out how to custom install one of these to lift me in and out!image.png.5b2d0b80872f4998e1e67abc40db18bd.pngAll a bit bollocks at the mo.

I know someone whose done lecky steering rack conversions for the Beam, he has his own machine shop and may be able to help you. One of the other guys was going to sell his car due to a shoulder injury but now he's done the modification and can drive it no worries.

Hmm well it seems I may shortly be an ex TR owner. Man drove car, then left my house with a big silly grin on face, while clutching a piece of paper with my bank details scribbled on it. So we shall see if the transfer of funds goes ahead as discussed.....

Not sure if I'm happy or not to be honest.....

Now how much is a Cayman again?

Sold my 6 when we moved from a place with a garage (for the 6) and parking for 5 cars, to a place with no garage and parking for 2 cars.

I now have an SL500

Can I tinker for hours, making her a better car?

No . . . . .not really, but, the flip side is 8 pots, 5 litres, the vario roof and a whole load of other, creature comforts.

Don't get me wrong, I miss the TR6 every day . . . . .it's just the noise that straight 6 makes, I get the shivers just thinking about it.

I bought the 6 to replace a 46' narrowboat that, for any number of reasons, had to go.  I miss the boat every day as well, in fact, I'd buy another one tomorrow, if it was practical.

I think that what I am tryingto say is, yes, it's sad that the car has gone, but, there are other pleasures that can go a long way to helping the empty feeling you get when the car is gone.

Thanks for your kind and sensible words. And perhaps once I've had time to A, actually complete the deal on my 6 and B, decided what I would like to do post that, then maybe there could be a Boxster or a Cayman in my future. Which to be honest would probably fit better with my schedule of spending most of my time at work in Nigeria and only limited time back here where the cars need to be run in-between all the other jobs my senior management have lined up waiting on my arrival home.

I think my problem which I suspect we have all faced is the despite my head telling me I'm doing the sensible thing. A run of made for TR'ing weather and the arthritis behaving itself for a few days as well made for a small brief interlude where I was indeed letting the heart take over and allowed me a small time to enjoy the car round some of our super roads in the Lincolnshire wolds. I decided to get a fresh MOT put on the car and while I was at the garage was able to see from the records of past tests and milage that my average was under 700 a year since 2015.

After the 6, I bought a very, very pretty R172 SLK200 AMG Sport.  My wife loved it, but, it was short of pots, only having 4 and was, if I'm honest a bit of a hairdressers car.  I sold it and got a Boxster, which I had for just over a year

The Boxster was capable of going like a scalded cat and drove like it was on rails, but, no . . . . .ummm . . . . . .charisma, believe it or not.  It was very precise, but, had no foibles, you knew it was going to stick to the road, no real fun.

If I had known just what a great car the SL500 is, I would not have bothered with the SLK or the Porsche

OK, not a sports car, but, for me, just the mutts nuts.

Sorry but disagree here, moderns are soulless and you know you are the limit not them, anyway a hard choice and glad not one i had to make, hope it's gone to a good home.

RR

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with you, neither Ian, nor I have suggested otherwise.

I sold my 6 for sound reasons.  Not my choice, but, as an adult, I had hard decisions to make.

Given the choice between a TR and a modern, I would choose the TR, but, I don't have that luxury.

Based on that, my choice, (one I do have) is not an SLK or a Porsche, but an SL500.

Hypothetical I know, but, if you were no longer able to own a classic, what would you drive?

Good question John ... I'd have an Ariel Atom

Oops

Disslexik fingers!

4 wheels?  ✔

Engine?  ✔

Anything else?  Not really.

Still, as a car, it qualifies

As a change of trousers generator, it also qualifies

Bet its fun, but, not exactly suited to going out in the rain

So a bit of thread resurrection here. As of Monday I am officially an ex TR6 owner. It was a bit of a wrench to see it drive off down the road, but it's gone to a good home where it is likely to feature in a future RBR or 10 countries. The blow was somewhat softened by my appointment this afternoon with a 2014 Boxster S. I'm mindful of Johns words above but the Boxster thing is an itch I need to scratch. Lets hope it lives up to expectations.....

Ditto with the itch and I bought the Boxster

Do it, don't worry about us nagging forumites, after all, you can always change it, if that's how it pans out

John.

I did.

So far so good but of course I'm in the first flush of dog with two tails territory still. Mostly a slog down the motorway to get back home but the last 20 miles or so are on some nice roads. So engaged the super sport mode and my goodness that livens things up a bit. Plus the attendant pops and bangs on the overrun had me smiling like an exited small boy. Lets see how that goes over time.

Enjoy Iain

A smile a day is worth an awful lot

Indeed it is, as are smiles per mile. Currently enjoying little of either as I'm at work in the middle of the Niger delta where there are no roads. Helicopters and boats the only option. However I'll be heading home in a couple of weeks and will be hoping the weather is going to be kind and the Boxster will come out to play with the lid down. Or even up if necessary. Which reminds me I really must get round to advertising my redundant stocks of Rainex now I have windscreen wipers that work :D
