Electronic ignition module set up

Car - TR3a 

if one was to go to the simplest electronic ignition ie the accuspark module

Do you you need one of these to set the timing at tickover and then the often quoted 3500rpm /32 degrees

A timing light is a very useful thing to have, though my personal preference is for a simple one without digital advance or whatever as my little monkey brain can’t handle any more variables......

As for what advance to time it to and at what rpm....... I’m staying out of that one!

There is an Accuspark fitted to our Spitfire which works as advertised.

There are a number of advantages in a light with an advance feature.

Set the timing up to start with, perhaps 11 degrees - whatever is recommended. Then drive the car and manually adjust until not pinking etc. Then refit strobe light and using the digital advance to set the timing mark to zero on the crank pointer do not alter the actual timing. Take the reading off the advance and that is what you need to set it up at any time in the future without needing a test drive afterwards.

Distributors have weights and perhaps vacuum advance, these are in published tables. So get a helper to sit in the car and slowly rev the engine and you will see the components of the distributor advance the spark, ask the helper to hold the revs at 500 rpm intervals, zero the timing mark using the strobe's advance to zero the pulse and note down the revs and " and read off the advance.

When you have finished you should have a small table showing the advance at 1,000, 1500, 2000, 2500 revs, 3000 revs etc, compare that to the published figures and you can immediately determine if the distributor is functioning correctly or there is a problem.

A task that is easier done than written I'm afraid,

I might have a few of those modules (but not the rotors) kicking around (new, boxed etc - I used to sell them, among other stuff) PM me if you're interested and I'll have a look.. 

You'll ideally need a timing light as you can't really set the timing statically with them (you kind of can, but it's flaky and inaccurate)

I hope accuspark have delivered a module and a timing light whilst I’ve been away this week  

Ill attempt to learn how to time it next week.
