SpitmkIIICPH
so - you´ve seen the buggered front panel in the other thread and yes my headlamps are a heap of rusty old shite!!! I spied a lovely BMW 635 CSI today - with nice round dual headlamps ;D are these the right size? I am sure beemer headlights are easier to source than buying LHD lamps at the "specialist".... Nick Jones
Yes, should be the right size. Was eying that sort of thing up for the Vitesse. Alot of the later Bimmer stuff has weird fitting arrangements but that 635 might be early enough to be easy..... Nick
SpitmkIIICPH
brill!! vitesse are same size of course ;D didn't think of that....
SteveA
and if all else fails, Chris Witor sells Cibie halogen conversions for the saloons, though I guess the shipping over to you may make it a bit more expensive
SpitmkIIICPH
thanx steve! have just asked for a quote for springs @witor but was hoping to source light units locally .... I guess I could also get some Stag Items at paddocks -
Nick Jones
I used the spots from a Mk2 Golf GTI for the middle ones (main beam only). Some bodging was required as they don't fit quite the same way but they work just fine (These + halogen conversion on the outer ones give better lights than my modernish Audi ;D). Nick B.
The halogen conversion on SteveAs 2000 worked wonders on the rbrr. Quite amazing really - better than my modern too Cheers Nick
sorbs
The original sealed beam lights are pretty good but it can be a pain to get replacements at short notice. Best to fit something with replaceable bulbs if you can. I'd fit relays too if uprating the bulbs. Can't remember if yours is a mk1 or 2 but the mk2 switches are (allegedly) prone to burning out hence the relay suggestion. I wonder if those BMW angel eye lights from a later 5 series could be dismantled and fitted? they just look like 4 round lights in a fancy plastic housing. Would they look good or shit on a 2000? I'd like to see one with them fitted.
Nick Jones
I think fitting the later BMW ones would be quite a challenge as they are very deep and have alot of surrounding plastickery. Might be possible to coax the actual lights out and do something with them but I have a suspicion they would look very wrong...... Nick

lordleonusa
Sure go ahead, it's your money to waste after all. Buy Wipac, and watch them corrode away after 2 years as all the silvering peels off. Or, buy Cibiés in the first place, proper engineered optical instruments, that will last many a year. You pays yer money, you takes yer choice. L ps. I (sadly) have NFI in Cibié. dammit.
Gerard
I concur with Misteur Guyot. Cibi-hay are the bees knees, the cat's pyjamas, the kipper's knickers and the dog's bollocks. And you don't need 45000W bulbs, normal bog-standard h-1 suffice
James
I'm quite happy with my Cibies running 90W/100W and 100W bulbs - very bright - especially after fitting relays. I have an ingenious method of doing this on a Mk1 - let me know if anyone wants details. The Mk1 switch burns out very easily - can be fixed if it doesn't burn the plastic inside - annoyingly mine went at 3am in the middle of France. Replaced with a new one now and the relays should protect it - just need to put in a tiny inline fuse before the light switch now.
James
Oh and yes - Cibie is the choice - the Wipac driving lights I bought rusted within 6 months of being outside!
SpitmkIIICPH
OK - Have a MKII - but a diagram of how to splice in relays would be very informative I have everything apart so now is the time.... I have ordered new plastic bowls / adjusters... will these cope with the 100W bulbs? otherwise I will stick to H4 55W
Nick B.
Go halogen. Steve put halogens in his, and they were VERY powerfull. Just ask James, as they were blinding him when we were playing chase during RBRR (or rather, he was probably driving his normal way, and I was struggling to catch up) Cheers Nick
James
I'd need to have a look at my Cibies after using 100W - but I know of others using them and they have lasted. As for the diagram - it's simple to do the relays - on a Mk1 all the headlight wires join the main loom just behind the fuse box on the inner wing. The ingenious method just means mounting the relays there - and then using bullet connectors etc to connect everything up in to the existing loom. No cutting of wire or anything. You can see what I made here: http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/wordpress/ It took me 15 minutes to install.
James
Where were you following us Nick? If it was Wales then Ben was driving. Were you behind us going through some roadworks? There was a ramp in the road... Ben never saw it and went full charge over it - that woke me up a bit!
SteveA
My outer lights (dim and main beam) are Cibies, with what ever bulbs were supplied Chris Witor and they work quite well. I'm not sure how they compare to the Lucas ones which were fitted previously, but certainly with all four light going it really shows the way. Nick B.
Where were you following us Nick? If it was Wales then Ben was driving. Were you behind us going through some roadworks? There was a ramp in the road... Ben never saw it and went full charge over it - that woke me up a bit! We were following you twice the second night. First on some dual carriageway, where we were giving it full throttle through the raing. Later on in the 5saloon convoy. Your codriver said our headlights were pretty powerfull! (cant remember specifics. We spoke briefly at the stop with the women with tits flashing) Cheers Nick
James
I did all 4 on my saloon Steve... eek £££ The bulbs in mine were off eBay - "MTEC" brand - bit cheapo but do the trick.
James
Ahhh yes the saloon convoy... where we decided to blast past everyone and then have a dodgy GPS moment by going the wrong way! Though this confuses me because at some point Ben and I must have swapped - because he left Gledrid, but I remember driving through all the rain getting to Gordano) (I wasn't used to the Garmin GPS - never would have happened with my trusty TomTom)
Nick B.
You really should do away with the GPS. Bruce Steve and I had some rather enjoyable moments were whe didn't have a clou on where we were. BTW - your GPS gives a brighter light than your rear lights (at a distance) - quite funny to follow the two dimm red spots with a slightly stronger white spot in the middle. Actually I thought I saw two GPS screens, but perhaps I just had double vision ;D ;D Cheers Nick
James
Nick, When there's only two of you - someone has to navigate We did have two GPS - my TomTom for speed and cameras - Ben's Garmin for navigation... James
Nick B.
Well, must admit - we dug the GPS out of the bag once or twice when we were completely lost. Perhaps we should have kept it handy, but actually was a good laugh when we were flying round the countryside trying to figure out where we were. That said - I must probably be the most useless navigator around. :-/ Cheers Nick
