mark spit Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 Hi, After to much time not using my car other than driving to it's annual MOT due to other general life stuff taking priority I've started doing stuff to the car seeing as I managed to get the garage tidied so I can get the thing out easily now. Many years ago I fitted an electric fan that is operated by an adjustable capilliary sensor that is stuck inside the radiator top hose, said top hose has just split and now needs replacing. I had been considering fitting a thermostatic switch into the bottom hose as that seems to be a better location for it and it can be awkward to get a good seal round the temp sensor tube. I wonder does anyone have any recommendations/links for something that I can get to fit to the bottom hose? Either a sleeve with a switch that fits in it or a switch that fits direct to the hose wall. Cheers Mark
Hamish Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 Mark if you have the space you could fit something like this but shop around you’ll find the boss adapter and thermo switch cheaper. And in the right temp on off range. https://www.demon-tweeks.com/lma-fan-controller-thermostat-632341/?sku=LMACF306/32&istCompanyId=a2904180-3a7d-4e56-b876-cf81c9512180&istFeedId=6fbc4b04-fd28-4ce1-8513-835c8f118690&istItemId=wptplwrii&istBid=t&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIi4Ptm4_z7AIVR4fVCh1UQwHNEAQYDCABEgKV9fD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
MilesA Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 Mark The other think you should do is give the cooling system a really robust flush to ensure best efficiency. If you opt for a bottom hose located sensor, remember that the temperature will be lower than in the top hose (7-9 degrees in my case). So take that into account when choosing the correct thermo switch. In my TR3A I tried a number of different thermo switches (eBay is your friend) before i found a on / off combination that worked for my car (although no one seemed to offer one with my ideal on / off temperatures). I tested the last couple by inserting a sensor in the top hose (linked to a cheap dual sensor thermo meter). I secured the hose with two jubilees clips. Haven't got round to removing the sensor but done 1500 pretty robust miles and ironically, not a hint of a leak. Whilst at it, you could also install a manual override switch to activate the fan when anticipating higher temperature situations (slow traffic, etc). Miles

mark spit Posted November 12, 2020 Author Posted November 12, 2020 Thanks for the replies, I already have a manual overide switch and picked up a boss/switch that unfortunately didn't arrive before I needed to replace the split top hose to go for MOT, I suspect there isn't a big enough gap etween the stat outlet and rad inlet to get the boss in and be able to get the hose bits on so it will probably go in the bottom hose when I get round to it with a suitably lower thermo switch. Yours Mark
Mark Posted November 12, 2020 Posted November 12, 2020 Don't know if you have this, but there should be a thin piece of rubber with a groove in that goes between the radiator inlet and top hose. This seals the peak created by the sensor wire when fitted inside the top hose. Should come with the kit, but I've made one in the past by melting a groove in a strip of inner tube rubber.
