John, I apologize to you if I came across that way. And although Skye is Canadian, when I look at the flags in the "who's online" link in the home page, it appears that 80-85% of the members are American. FWIW, I actually agreed with your "topic" wholeheartedly. It was the delivery method I was concerned about. Hence my suggestion of the idea being like going into a Tesco and walk the aisles handing out Aldi flyers. Maybe I had that wrong. Having been involved in quite a few of the now deleted threads, I found that no matter how diplomatically I tried to "educate" some of them on the actual truth, any indication of not liking Trump has some of them ready to tar and feather his opponents. Virtually all threads that went political, were deleted. Because certain individuals made sure they went too far, to get them deleted. (I suspect that. I can't prove it.) Not sure if you noticed it before or not, but it seems almost every time one of those threads got going, you'd soon see one or more "I'm leaving" threads start up by someone saying "I came here to discuss Triumphs, not politics". And every time, several people would adivse the individuals to simply ignore the threads. But that wasn't a good enough answer. Rick A.

No oil in it when I got it, the minor remnants left inside are not completely black (slight green tinge). I'm measuring CWP backlash directly, its coming out a hair under 8 thou (0.20mm). WSM says 4-6 thou, but I feel that isn't too far out given bearing wear etc? The sun and planet mesh feels very good, no backlash I can detect. I was thinking of going to Stoneleigh this year, will let you know. Diff is candidate for rebuild to go into my Standard Eight which I plan to put a more or less standard Spitfire Mk.III engine in. I have one more diff somewhere that I need to check. Mostly concerned about reliability, have some plans for the car once I'm finished that require endurance. I'm also not that keen on reproduction parts. Another picture, I've circled the areas I'm concerned about, one is the blackish line on the toe to heel of teeth, the other is the shiny spot towards the heel of the teeth. I can't quite tell if its some kind of micropitting or not. I guess I've never actually paid much attention before, the diff that went to Mongolia and back didn't get more than a cursory glance and the output bearings and seals replaced (yet it still leaked). -
Yep - as you knowledgable people say. Good flux, and leaded solder. I'm afraid the environmentally friendly lead free stuff is rubbish - especially on old / used stuff. I use a standard plumbers solder for water / coolant .... and Frys Fluxite for electrics

Sooooo difficult to tell with photos. You can't change the light and see the different patterns. But as Nick says, does not look bad. I guess you're concerned by the line across the teeth (top to bottom)? If you can't feel it, then it's probably superficial. What are you going to do with the diff? Std power / build? Probably fine. Set up carefully and it will be fine for 50k miles. Attack it with some 600 grade wet and dry. You can't do any harm (do by hand, and you will only polish - unless you're at it for more than 5 minutes!!!) The alternative is a questionable quality new item. I prefer original OEM parts. ....plus I hate throwing anything that has some life left in it.

What backlash are you checking? diff itself (where what seems alarming makes li=ttle difference) or in the CW+P which should be almost nothing? That is the important bit. All this reminds me I need to dig that dolly axle out and pull the diff. I don't suppose you are going to Stoneleigh?

I’m no expert but doesn’t look completely terrible to me. No sharp edges on the teeth? What was the oil like - if any? -

John I beg to differ as politely as possible on that one. If we ignore the fact that it is trite, threatening, aggressive and f..... rude, then there is an equally plausible argument that says we'd be speaking Russian. Essentially the only reason there was even a Europe worth, or even concevably capable of fighting the Germans other than Russia by the end of 1941 is because Britain and the Commomweath (along with the sacrifice of the Poles, French, Dutch, Belgians and Norwegians) had stopped the Germans at the Channel. If that hadn't happened then it would have been impossible for anyone to mount a practical seabourne invasion and the ultimate outcome in Europe would have been solely down to the Germans and Russians. At that would have been a toss up. And that even assumes the Americans would have given a f... about Europe. Which was most definitely NOT a given. Remember that one of the three US war aims in WW2 was to end the British Empire and take over as the dominant power in the world. The other two were defeating Japan and Germany. If Britain had gone down in 1940 then Churchill would have been unable to work his magic on the US and turn them from at best ambivalence and at worst hostility into a willing ally - and even that 'willingness' came at a crippling cost to us! Remember too that Britian was the ONLY country in WW2 to be there at the start and at the end and the Britain and it's Empire allies were the ONLY ones to enter the war on a principle (even France only did becuse of Britain). All the rest did it either because they were the aggressors or because they were attacked. -

Didn't they nearly vote to speak it themselves instead of English in the late 1700's?
