    • And the Stewart's from Brittany.  https://www.francethisway.com/places/doldebretagne.php
    • I think a lot of it also has to do with taking it for granted, the previous generations have known not having everything handed to you on a plate. The current generation are used to taking from an over dwindling pool of resources not mater what the consequences. SWMBO is in the NHS, in the days she was boots on the ground she would tell stories of families leaving Grandma in hospital for another week because they were too busy or away on holiday.
    • Mattius. Too true. In creating the NHS Bevan assumed that its formation would actually reduce health care costs over time. Completely failing to consider the consequences of better health care on longevity. Mind you his assumptions about national insurance and pensions were equally wide of the mark. And the funding model which assumed current pensions would be paid for by those actually in work through the Government current account rather than an investment fund was probably even more flawed. Not really the hero he is made out to be.
    • thanks guys.     It’s a difficult last corner as really if you clip the drain you’ve (I’ve) turned in too early.
    • Bannockburn was one of those spectacularly decisive battles, like Agincourt or Crecy. 100 years later Flodden was the return match score draw, except that in this case James IV didn't get to go homeward as the last reigning monarch killed in battle on British soil. And of course 100 years after that it was James VI who gained the final 2 out of 3 when he took the English crown. But 1314 is truly ancient history and the Scots if today are most certainly not those who won victory at Bannockburn, and we certainly don't have leaders if the calibre of Bruce (who was incidentally of Norman English decent rather than actual Scottish like Wallace).
    • Part of the problem with the NHS is life expectancy is actually getting longer and longer. Like it or loath it, with current funding model it's unsustainable.
    • Play up, Colin! I like to listen to "In our Time" with Melvyn Bragg while I'm working garage or garden, and one episode I listened to recently (broadcast 2011!) was on "The Battle of Bannockburn".   Now I've heard (and forgive me, sung!) the magnificent if unofficial Scots National Anthem, "Flower of Scotland", with it's chorus about  sending proud Edwards army home again, "Tae think again". I never knew until I heard that episode, what an abject defeat Bannockburn was for the English - Edward had to flee the field!   The Flower of Scotland will rise again! John
    • And notice how generally shiite, on average the Scots are. In many places it's a lot worse and sadly not getting much better. And that is with an NHS spend per person being significantly higher than anywhere else in the UK. I guess our government has more important priorities to focus on. Historic witchery conviction pardons being one of them! But I digress....
    • Excellent Hamish. Both video and the drives. Almost makes me want to do it again myself! Hadn't really appeciated it before until I watched the Auto Shennanigans video, but now that drain cover on the inside of the right hander is a bit of a monster. Really notice it on your video when you clip it. I did see that the big single seater shown on Auto Shennanigans actively dodged it with his much stiffer suspension setup.
    • in England, 78.8 years for males and 82.8 years for females in Scotland, 76.5 years for males and 80.7 years for females in Wales, 77.9 years for males and 81.8 years for females in Northern Ireland, 78.4 years for males and 82.3 years for female Quote: Office for National Statistics; National life tables – life expectancy in the UK - Office for National Statistics Everywhere (not just UK) women live longer than men - on average. But, yes.  Sit down a lot, eat poor food, smoke at all or drink to excess, and your gender won't help.
