John I
Assistance most greatfully required. I have just dug out an old 3 rail box with od from the back of the garage and I can't recall where I came by it or what it's from. It doesn't have the usual coding on the casing. In the area where normal ID is it has WE39365, I've not heard of a WE prefix any ideas? It is coupled to an early Dolly 1850 J type ID 25/115847 label is in green. yorkshire_spam
Are you sure it's WE and not just badly stamped? I think WH or WM would be Dolomite 1850?
John I
Unfortunately the E is very prominent, the W looks like an upside down M but is a bit fainter. Even ME doesn't give a useable answer as that is for a 2000 and this is certainly a 3rail box!
Nick Jones
I tend not to take much notice of the codes. Most of these have been apart at least twice and even if you can identify the origin from the code, there’s no knowing if it’s still true. If the j-type is attached via the short type adapter and the input shaft is 1” with the coarse spline, it most likely is an early 1850 box. If the put shaft is smaller, then late MkIV Spitty. If long OD adapter and 1”fine spline shaft then it’s a single rail 1850 built into a 3 rail case. Nice find anyway. I’ve been looking out for one of those short OD adapters for ages.... John I
Thanks Nick, it does have course 1" input shaft. The adaptor is 1" 5/8 or 42mm in new money. Is this short certainly looks it!
Nick Jones
I think so..... I have a long one I can measure for comparison. Dolly 1850 3 rail is not a bad starting point. Though it has the small mainshaft tip and is just as wear prone as the GT6/Vitesse it does has the j-type. Is this the start point for a rebuild?
