martinholmesuk
Well bad news regarding my CAM. I run off from work to engineering place and grabbed the Ken Cam TH12 dropped it off home to my dad then we looking and I said it's wrong length. 6 or so inches too long (4cyl 8 lobes) It's stamped TH12 which according to parts book is a spitfire high torque CAM. So mix up at Kent Cams! Waiting for a call back so it can return for correct CAM. Bummer (eek)
martinholmesuk
|Good news! Kent cams do not know what they sent but will have it picked up on Monday and the correct CAM dropped off. I'm working saturday but Sunday I will make sure engine is clean and ready for parts. Happy now!

sparky_spit
Looking good Martin. One question... I notice you have got an Aleybars rollbar and a hood frame in your pics. I've just got an Aleybar from fleabay and wondered whether the hood frame clears it or not? Cheers, Mike
Jony
mine did just be careful of the soft top locking lever at the front as they can catch and snap, ask me how i know lol
martinholmesuk
@ sparky_spit , I not got around to trying it with the hood so going with what Jony says. The engine has had it's Kent Cam TH12 fitted and flywheel. Cam followers are in and I painted the engine again. Here is my dad. It's funny as we having matching garage clothes lol.. (Santa's elfs) Had to get a spigot bushe this morning and the one which hold clutch arm carrier thing in. Tomorrow we will setup the timing and put engine back in! Whooooo Hoooooo
martinholmesuk
Today the head is back on and the timing is setup. Slight question hangs over the rockers at the moment. Tomorrow the engine will go back into the car!

popeye
Hi Martin, You have got na nice car: cosmic wheels, alleybar ... 8) 8) And now a good body with a lot of new panels...and a new engine :) The kent th12 seems to be a nice camshaft for a road car. I hesitate in my choice: TH5, TH12 or a piper 270... : : I have post the same details on the threads concerning the pedestral shims: the pedestral shims are available form piper: you will have to look at the pdf catalog. The shims are listed at the end of the catalog. I hope this help and good luck in the rebuilding job.
martinholmesuk
@ Dave, Oh yes it's red. I have a matching red spitfire and engine crane and socks! lol @ Popeye, I just saw your reply. Thank you. I'll let my dad have a look. His check the valve clearance and came up with what Dave said. The valve are closed and rockers goes to the side and it locked etc. Thanks for the comments! It's things like that which help me get on with the tast ahead. When I started this I thought it would take only 2 months but 11 months later lol. Spitfire was really rusty before all the new panels went on. I spent so many hours in the garage and 3 girlfriends later it's almost ready for painting LOL. I picked the TH12 because of the torque from low down. The other cams all seem to want more revs and then you need to keep up there. I'm used to torque with my 480 turbo so knew what I wanted more of. Here are a load of pictures while I'm waiting for my dad to come home so we can fit the engine. SteveA
You'll be pulling the gearbox out of the car and attaching it to the engine before dropping the engine in? Certainly easier to fit it all that way. Steve
martinholmesuk
You prob guess that it did not go in on Wednesday! My Dad ended up staying at work so I had a go but could not mate the engine and box. It was a little out at the bottom. I came home yesterday and it's been fitted by dad in about 40mins! Looking great! I'm well excited now!

I have fitted a golf gti 8valve rad (1989 model) , Thanks for the idea from Mike.
martinholmesuk
The rad is now plumbed in. Exhaust is semi fitted and sounds just amazing!! (clap) Fitted header tank from a volvo 400 series and made some custom mounts so it's above the rad. Check out how I fill the system with water. The washer bottle (was overflow) is mounted along with the EWP. Still waiting for carbs :-(
DaveNotSoSideways
Soz to be the bringer of bad news...The pipe going from the header tank to the block will overflow the header tank, why? Cause thats under pressure, will flow out of the fixing on the block and fill the header tank...it needs to under constant suction...So will need to be joined the pipe heading into the back of the water pump... You need to re-route that. Looking good though. Put the pipe from the top of the header tank to the top of the radiator or add a pipe into the thermostat housing cover and run that to the header tank... DaveNotSoSideways
P.S you have a pipe outlet on the stainless pipe under the cars just above your blue pipe, fit the header tank pipe to that. if you need that outlet weld up a piece of a pipe to make a T to add another outlet into the system. Water systems are a bit a speciality of mine
DaveNotSoSideways
AHHH! or do you fill the system via that pipe on the block drain? You should just be able to fill the header tank and it'll fill the system up anyways...it'll burp the air through the smaller pipe into the header tank etc. That extra piece of pipe on the metal one under the carbs looks welded on, so maybe you adjusted it? Been ages since I had such stuff on mine
martinholmesuk
Hi Dave, 'AHHH! or do you fill the system via that pipe on the block drain?' Yes I'm filling the engine using the drain on block, It all seems to be working fine while on idle / fast idle. Cheers Martin
martinholmesuk
Waiting for my carbs :-( I have started sorting out the loom. 1st I unwrap the nasty dirty loom and check it's OK. I then found a load of cable tidy at Maplin for £2.40 which makes everything look very tidy. The body rub down for painting has also started! martinholmesuk
The carbs turned up and look fine. I hope to have them on and running on Friday. :-)
Gerard
Hm. Are they these famous ram pipes I keep hearing about? what do they do exactly? (apart from the very obvious "replace the air filter")
DaveNotSoSideways
Cut the gauze from those Trumpets... = about 20HP more I'd hang anyone selling gauzed trumpets, its worse than murdering fluffy kittens for fun, in my book anyways.
