Having persuaded the elderly computer that my version of VCDS diagnostic software lives on that it’s not dead…..  I’ve been able to do a proper code read - and found absolutely nothing useful. No codes in the ABS or stability systems. Proved that all four wheel sensors work and give plausible, matching speeds. Did an output test on the ABS pump and that worked as expected too.  And now both the ABS and traction control work again. This is a good thing, but I’d really like to know why it wasn’t previously and no warning lights! Not conducive to trust!
