egbert
So, I thought I'd post a bit of a milestone. I have finally mated the type 9 gearbox to the k-series engine. It took some head scratching when it didn't initially fit. But, once i realised the splines on the input shaft need some machining back. So here it is and I'm well chuffed; I connected the starter and it truns over just fine.
Spit131
Hi Egbert , just sorting my type 9 . What hydraulics etc did you use ? M
egbert
I have used a toroidal cylinder and spacer. I drilled a couple of holes in the bell housing one for bleed and one for supply. I also had to modify the bell housing to fit over the lower bush which protrudes from the front of the gearbox.
Spit131
All looks very profesional . Excuse the ignorance but what is ' toroidal ' ?
Nick Jones
Toroidal (doughnut shaped) = concentric clutch slave Nick
Spit131
Thanks again Nick . Egbert are you sticking with the existing gear lever or do you have any mods in mind . I can't see that the type 9 position is that much of a problem especially if you have a kinked lever .
egbert
At the minute sticking with it. Hopefully getting the engine and gear box in this evening to see what it looks like.
egbert
Managed to slot the engine in this evening. Needs a little fettling around the body but it's a good fit. The last pic is where I think I'll mount the remote oil filter - although I don't like the housing.
egbert
Need to rent or buy an engine hoist - I'm not sure my garage rafters will take another engine and gear box lift!!
itiejim
Looks like good progress, a couple of experiences from my car - with the same VVC engine - you'll be fine with the gear lever position. My engine is mounted further back than yours and the gear lever position is very comfortable, much better than the long stretch for the standard one. The only thing I had to do was cut out the handbrake mount and place it slightly to the passenger side to stop interference between handbrake and gear levers. Regarding the remote filter mount - with the engine further back in the car I have a bracing bar between the shock turrets which the remote is mounted to, perhaps something you could consider. I would also mention that I am currently doing an engine rebuild due to the fact that the same remote filter housing as your failed. It appears that the manufacturer forgot to put thread lock on the pipe which the filter spins onto and it unthreaded with the predictably disastrous consequences. I await some form of remedy from the manufacturer. To be fair to them they have looked at it and are making all the right noises, so we'll see. I would definitely recommend trying to turn the pipe with a pair of grips or similar though before fitment to check it's well threadlocked in place... egbert
Itiejim - thanks for that. I have measured up for a brace bar so thats a good idea for the remote filter.
egbert
So something a bit odd with my "professionally" rebuilt gear box. It was making an odd sound when I rotated the input shaft. I whipped off the lid for a nosey and found this -
egbert
It's a zip lock bag with two splines in it!!
Spit131
Always nice to see other people make stupid mistakes !
egbert
But why would they leave it in there. It's not like you wouldn't notice it as you screwed the lid back on!!
egbert
Not much progress as work is getting in the way. I've been playing around with the radiator as I got a Caterham one for free. Although it looks a little small now I have it place... The MGZR fan looks like it will fit OK though
egbert
So I got the body off today to fit the propshaft I purchased over a year ago and its too long! I've found a place in Leicester and asked them for a quote.

itiejim
Looks good, but will the bonnet go over that?
egbert
It's very marginally wider than the standard radiator bracket and slightly shorter. So I'm hoping so...
egbert
Got my shortened propshaft back and the woes with my professionally rebuilt gearbox continue! It seems the tail housing bush is knackered as the propshaft won't slide in. Bugger!!
