First time

Hi, been looking at others posts for a long time now, but i thought would finally put something on here. I have a 1970 mk2 vitesse that has been off the road since 1995. I have a small problem with fitting new bonnet buffers to the bonnet . I purchased a pair of new buffers, but was informed that they were bigger than the originals but where the recommended replacement. Anybody fitted these, any advise? as i am struggling to fit them(one slipped out of my fingers and dropped down in the bonnet). Hoping someone can help.
