Well, thought I would get clever and resourceful and find a reliable way to resurface my used tappets with what I have at hand. I have a Mill, thought why not grip the tappet in a holder ,rotate and pass over a grinding wheel mounted on the machine bed. In this case a bench grinder mounted to the T-Slots.
The GT6 tappets are .800", I have a spare .750" taper collet so bore it out, in the spindle, and voila I have an accurate and straight holder. I installed the collet in the master holder, took the tool block from the lathe with a boring bar in it and mounted it to the table vice. Boring ensues to the appropriate dimensions
Looks good and in theory should be good enough. After that work I mounted a new tappet in, indicated across the flat bottom area, nearly .001" out of parallel. Tried a few more, same thing. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Now back to my friends Engineering Shop, mount them in a six jaw on the OD grinder and do it the right way, Like I just should have from the start.
