Err . I hate backs. Having mine bolted together was the best thing ever. It now aches mildly at all times as opposed to spending 3 weeks in every 3 months in spasm.

Hope it feels better soon John , they really are debilitating are back pains

This was a strange one!   After bending sideways in the shower to, er, wash myself, I straightened up and had a spasm in the same loin (bit between ribs and pelvic crest) which persisted with movement.  I must have tweaked a spinal nerve, but probably T10, which is unusual.    It has abated now - activity is the thing!    Onwrads and, er upwards!

Thnaks for the good wishes!

Hello, Had L4 and L5 removed and some of my hip transplanted in mine (about 33 years ago) and 75 in about a fortnight. It now aches slightly all the time and A BIT worse some of the time and.... but there are a lot of people worse off. So glad to be able to do what I can!  Regards, Michael.

Back in Christmas 2015 my lad got off an aircraft (he is a BA cabin purser) at Terminal 5 Heathrow and whilst walking through the terminal he fell over. Nobody came to help.

He stood up and fell over again - odd he thought.  No pain but horizontal.

Eventually he stood up and found his left foot was pointing downwards and couldn't be moved up or sideways.

Within a week he was in Charring Cross Hospital having had serious spinal surgery.

A disc or something had gone silly and debris was pressing on the nerve low down the spine.

The foot came back to life immediately after the op.

Over the next two/three years he had three more op's in the same/close by place to relieve pain (some very severe).

It is now as good as it will ever be - bearable but annoying with occasional painkillers.

He is alive and walking, employed and mobile - a lucky lad.

Some years ago I hurt my lower back when lifting a bag of cement. I couldn't bend my ankle properly or lift my left foot without pulling it up with my hand. The doctor identified the L3 disc (or maybe L4?) as the problem. He gave me exercises to do and told me that the nerves for bowel and bladder control come out of the spine at the same place, which sharpened my attention to doing the exercises somewhat..... Ok now thankfully.

Backs are without doubt strange beasts. When mine used to spasm it was never doing anything major, it was tying shoe, picking up a pen from the floor that set it off.  No pain just a tingle , then I knew what was coming which was a body lurched to one side in spasm for 3 weeks.

I dont miss that joy. Before they fused S1 L5 L4 we tried exercises, but it was soon discovered that actually set it off as opposed to helped.

Sitting here with a bad back at the moment. Was moving a couple of heavy tool boxes around, on the way to work on my Vitesse at my lock up. No issues, leant over to pick a rag up off the floor slightly rotated as I stood up, felt a twinge, by the time I got down the garden path I was in agony.

Only thing that helps me is to try to keep moving as much as possible. Sitting for any length of time makes thing worse for me.

Just to add to the high proportion of those here with back problems, I had a prolapsed disc about 10 years ago. Picking up something heavy in the garden using back and not legs. Everyone was out and I was there for about an hour, stuck in this bent position.

I was all for surgery but my consultant persisted with drugs and then pilates for 6 months and things were corrected. I am still super careful about picking anything up, even from low drawers in the kitchen.

Someone suggested that we still haven't adapted to walking on two legs instead of four limbs!

Today I cancelled my hotel and plane to London in June, as Denmark didn't make it to the green list of countries.

Bollocks.

Tks Miles, yes quite good on low dose DOPA and 40,000 IU pd.

Magnesium also worth trying, It is marginal in most diets.

Same here, long and sometimes painful rehab for various bodily damage, ankle, shoulder, neck and back over the years. A future of regular stretching, exercise and yoga lies ahead.

Although maybe should have saved the effort and pain and just taken pills.

Bollocks is right. Although the way things are looking even once things open up it's not clear that the airport administration will be able to cope with international travel without huge delays.

Today I fitted an outside socket and RCD to the rental flat so they can mow the grass.

TR Register track day at Castle Coombe. Great organisation (light touch, but efficient).

So nice to be out in the company of like-minded friends, both old and new.

Weather was a bit mixed, but I didn’t mind.

Yep, I really don’t mind the wet. Doesn’t feel like it affects my pace all that much whereas everyone else slows down.

Said it before but those cheaply Falken tyres are outstanding in the wet even now 1/2 worn (more like 2/3 after yesterday) and now they are part worn they are good in the dry too. Grippy, but progressive and not too squealy.

This evening, I discovered that when rebuilding the front suspension of my TR6, having one trunnion with 3 degree caster (correct) and one with 0 degree caster (incorrect) is not an ideal set up!

Just goes to show that when I removed the parts 3 years ago I didn't notice that on the near side, the upper wishbones must have been reversed too, else it wouldn't have been attached.

i hope it wasn't built like that to correct a chassis-ism

i love the way my car handles but gawd know what an alignment check would show as i built my front suspension and don't do enough non competition miles to see the tyre  wear

Setting up the Spitfire I discovered that the upper wishbone mounts on the LHS are about 3mm inboard of the RHS from a datum along the centre of the chassis. Nothing obviously bent so just taken out with adjustment.

Interesting. Had you been driving it like that? Did it pull to one side?

Ha, the car has been off the road for so long now, I can't really remember but I don't think so, or I would have investigated it at the time.  My understanding of the purpose of building in caster is to get the steering to tend towards the straight ahead 'hands off' but I may be wrong and I don't recall the steering not doing that.

In reality, as Hamish implies, there are enough imperfections in an old chassis, it's probably just one of many things that could hamper optimal performance, even ignoring the 16 Stone nut behind the wheel:biggrin:

The main 'oh bollocks' issue is just that having managed to get some time to start the reassembly, I've now got to wait for the new part.  At least they are still available and in stock.

Cheers
