TR4A 2 speed DR3 switch upgrade to 14W Motor

Hi Folks,

I posted this the other day on the TRR Forum and nobody seems that interested. I thought it was quite clever.

It is to make the standard 34477A 2 speed PULL switch operate the 14W  which is far superior to the DR3.

Hi Folks,

as many of you will know that the two speed DR3 Lucas motor is past its best and is now pretty useless for the job in hand.

A number of people have fitted the 14W (TR6, LandRover ETC) motor which is very powerful and does the job required.

Sadly the original 4A switch does not work unless you are happy to have no self park.

I've had a look into what is/isn't going on and have come up TRumps.

I had an idea a couple of months ago but it require an additional relay - functional but not elegant.

I now have a pull switch on its own.

Firstly you will need the 35521A,  34477,  BHA4578 or 34519A pull assembly (there may be other numbers)  if you have the original then fine.

Secondly - You will also require the switch body from the Toggle version 35927 - SVC  have these at apprx £30 each

https://www.s-v-c.co.uk/products/35927-lucas-flick-switch-2-speed-wiper

Set the switch to its centre position.

Remove the switch assembly from both switches. Pull the metal clips up and pull the switch out.

You will notice that the new switch black block uses pin 2.  This is important.

Push a thick piece of metal/card through the gap between pins 4 & 6 and push the switch assembly over this. This open the contacts for easy fitting.

NOTE - the front  switch assembly locates onto the body with a key on the side.

Push the switch assembly fully home. Reform the locking clips.

Job done.

WIRING for the 14W Motor

GREEN/BROWN   =  Pin 2   Self Park

GREEN                =  Pin 4   12V  Power

GREEN/RED         = Pin 6    Slow

GREEN/BLUE       = Pin 8   Fast

I hope this helps a few folk out there

Roger

I then added this extra part that may make life easier

looking at the black body of both types of switch the difference is contact #2.

It is not there for the DR3

It is there for the 14W

Therefore you can upgrade the original switch by adding contact #2.

For this you will need an old switch to rob either contact #2 OR contact #8  OR make a new contact from scrap copper

Easily removed and fitted with  a pop rivet.

Roger

PS   If the switch came with all the common contacts in place then it would drive both motors.

Hi Colin,

the early Spit appears to have a single speed DR3 motor. This uses a simple On/Off pull switch.

You can replace/modify the original  DR3 motor for two speed - adding a 10 ohm resistor in the field winding.

OR go extreme and fit the 14W (if it will fit) which is by far the very best option.

My switch mod above will work for both motors.

I fitted the later 14W motor to the Vitesse in 2008 pre RBRR (and good job too, it rained a lot).

I can’t now remember how I got around the wiring and switching issue but I do recall it caused some cussing.

Would really like to fit a simple column switch to give me a single sweep function…. One day….

As Roger says probably the best option. His suggestion regards the switch would suit me. As for the single sweep thing I have wondered if an old fashioned floor switch could be used to do the job rather than messing with the column. I do much prefer the look of the pre 1500 Spitfire column.

A simple 555 timer and power switching device should do it, using the self park lead just pull it to ground.

There were loads of circuits in the 1970 electronic mags.

These are the cheapest switch options I have found.

The second option will work with the herald / Vitesse knob, you will need to move the locking hole back about 3mm.

Whether a modern rain sensor could be used with a timer circuit to offer an intermittent wipe function could be looked into.

Looks very similar to what I have in the GT6 (Chris's Spit also)

Interesting question that.....

I had a quick look in the electronic mag archives and there are several designs. There also is a kit (https://quasarelectronics.co.uk/Item/quasar-kit-8093-intermittent-windscreen-wiper-controller).

The three way headlight switch (https://www.autoelectricalpartsuk.co.uk/automotive-switches/automotive-rotary-switch/headlamp-rotary-horn-push-064570) could be used so that the third position was intermittent wipe function, with the added bonus of an electric washer.
