michaeljf Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 Hello, Another distraction while I am waiting for the extractors for the TR6. I loaned this one (Toyota Coaster '92 HZB30) to one of my sons and it came home on a tilt tray ! So off with the head for a diagnosis. Regards, Michael.

michaeljf Posted August 25, 2022 Author Posted August 25, 2022 Hello Nick, Right again! 7metres, 1HZ motor 4.2 L,OHC, cross flow head and I have fitted a factory turbo (to help compensate for the horrible gear ratios). It is now converted to a motorhome. Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted August 26, 2022 Author Posted August 26, 2022 Hello, Well almost ready to lift the head off and out! Can only stand (kneel) for so long, And I was winging (to myself about how complicated the Triumph is, is it good to have a reality check now and again ? Regards, Michael.
Nick Jones Posted August 26, 2022 Posted August 26, 2022 Nice camper van. Big. Engine work from your sofa? (As it were)
michaeljf Posted August 26, 2022 Author Posted August 26, 2022 Hello Nick, I wish, but close, kneeling beside it! Regards, Michael.
JohnD Posted August 26, 2022 Posted August 26, 2022 (edited) Michael, I have one of these for low working: I also wear overalls with rubber knee pads. Found some with "Cordura" pockets for the pads, as on previous ones the cloth just wore out. (Made by Dassy - DASSY DASSY® Cannes Two-tone overall with knee pockets) The pads make it much more comfortable, although just getting up again is still an effort! michaeljf Posted August 27, 2022 Author Posted August 27, 2022 Hello John, As the picture will show I have a built in "kneeler" and some padding otherwise your idea sounds good. When I was cracking the head studs I came across a wayward tappet shim! Regards, Michael.

Unusual failure, especially on a low-revving diesel…… Hope nothing too grisly revealed! Seems to be a tough and well regarded engine. Only weakness being occasional cracking of head around the pre-chambers or pre chambers themselves cracking.
JohnD Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 Mike, Aha! I see! You are operating down a hole in the floor. No stool will help then, and lying on your tummy just makes getting up again worse, or that's what I find! A loose cam follower!!! That could only mean terminal failure on a TRiumph engine! Hope yours is only indisposed! John
michaeljf Posted August 27, 2022 Author Posted August 27, 2022 Hello, All will be revealed on Monday, with some luck (it's an adjuster shim that fits on top of the bucket) Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted August 30, 2022 Author Posted August 30, 2022 Hello, Uncovered some more nasty's and a contributing factor to the failure. First picture at second bore near my knee. Then last picture is an example of combustion chambers,2,3,4 and 5,although I have been told the cracks are not a drama on these heads!! and the water loss appears to be the oil cooler alloy cover corroding and leaking. Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted September 14, 2022 Author Posted September 14, 2022 Hello, There has been a bit of progress and now I am waiting for a mobile mechanic to come to give an opinion. Third photo is of where the valve has been hitting piston (when shim came out) and fourth photo is of top compression ring stuck in land. Regards, Michael.
thebrookster Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 You may decide to replace the piston anyway, but if you want to try and remove the piston ring that is stuck soak it in water for 24 hours. It is a surprisingly effective trick, I often have to soak turbochargers onboard to get them to separate into their respective pieces. Phil

Nick Jones Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 11 hours ago, michaeljf said: fourth photo is of top compression ring stuck in land Hmmm…. Looks like the top of the piston has actually been misshapen by the valve contact, spreading sideways to cause that area of bore contact and downwards to trap the top ring. The latter is surprising given how far down the ring is…. Not ideal, but not necessarily a show stopper either. Could likely be recovered with some care fettling provided there are no signs of cracking. Looks to be a hot spot on the trapped ring too see blued area just right of the gap. Check bore condition in matching area. Ring seal previously excellent -look how clean it is below the second ring. The bearings are a bit sad. Was there any water in the oil?
michaeljf Posted September 15, 2022 Author Posted September 15, 2022 Hello all, Will remember that trick Phil,(not sure how stuck the ring is as I didn't want to disturb it before before the expert has a look). The stuck ring is not on the piston that has been hit by the valve. Bores look good, not even any sign of a lip ! Factory No.2 std. pistons, AND the speedo says 503,000 kms.,but the valves are all numbered and the crank seems to measure std. The oil looked a bit dirty but it had done 8,500 km. (I usually change it and the filter about 6,000 kms.) I fitted the factory turbo at 480,000 kms and the bearings looked new then! Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted September 16, 2022 Author Posted September 16, 2022 Hello, The mobile mechanic (looked like a bit of a kid) came this afternoon and had a look and made some suggestions and will get back to me with a quote and $125 cash thank you. Regards, Michael. 1
michaeljf Posted September 30, 2022 Author Posted September 30, 2022 Hello, Waiting for the mobile mechanic to get back to me! Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted October 5, 2022 Author Posted October 5, 2022 Hello Nick, I did that today and he fell out! Recons he is too busy! So back to the drawing board. Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted October 5, 2022 Author Posted October 5, 2022 Hello Nick, That is for sure, not only has it put the rebuild back but I have to start all over by finding someone else! Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted October 18, 2022 Author Posted October 18, 2022 Hello, Have found someone! The workshop that looks after our modern means of conveyance. After the beginning of November, so ordered (and paid)a reconditioned exchange motor today, (from Victoria, $495 freight) last one they had (no more for approx. six months it seems ). It has internals to suit turbochargers! Even more jobs! Regards, Michael.
Escadrille Ecosse Posted October 18, 2022 Posted October 18, 2022 Glad to hear that you have a solution and are making progress. I was going to say well done and a very decent price when I realised that the $495 was just carriage. Eeek!
