My worst dramatic moment was Stonehaven by pass late at night, going up the big dipper at full chat when the anti roll bar sheared off the mounts rounding the top curve. 

Major wobble on and an oh my gawd brown pants moment, so 60 mph would be quite an calm event?

Not to belittle your failure, which was undoubtedly more than exciting enough.......:blink:  Especially for the Honda Jazz driver

Usually they break on the other side of the bearing and the wheel comes right off along with the brake drum...... three wheels on your wagon and no brakes...... perfect..... :pinch:

Agree that the tack may well have started the failure though I've also seen it reported that they occasionally break where a groove has been worn by the oil seal lip and acted as  stress raiser.  The more common outer shaft failure as mentioned above seems to be caused by the rough edges around the hub keyway.

Hello All

               He now has a complete drive shaft to fit so he can come out to play with the Musketeers again! when he can get time off work!!!

I like being retired not so sure about the old bit!

Me and the Memsahib are still hoping we can go on a jolly to Spain in September!  and I hope me and our son can go to Spa 6 hours at end of September! to see proper cars racing!(no electronics etc) just seat of the pants stuff

Life is for living and recent times have proved how fragile it is!

So make the most of it while you can but sensibly?

Obviously the shaft is under a torsional load.  I guess they are under a fair bit of tensile load... more than I imagined!

24 hours on and happy it wasn’t more serious.  Has anyone ever had stronger shafts made.  Do they fail often?  What grade of steel are they?  Trying to rationalise it.  I used to run upgraded halfshafts for trialing on my defender made from 4340 steel.

Also, those little bushes for the trunnion.  They are a pain in the arse if you don’t mind my observation.

Company called Summers Brothers in the USA makes special shafts (or used to). Very expensive. We’re used mainly by the racers who were the ones shedding wheels most often. The Summers Bros ones were claimed in breakable..... inevitably some dedicated person then broke one (Mr Vowel where are you now?).

Failures in road cars, especially standard road cars were extremely rare, but have become slightly more commonplace as the parts get older and more used. Typically there is a specific reason (as in your case).

New parts are available. Care is needed as quality is.......variable. Roger and David (Jumping Frog) are the forum specialists!

Chris Sherrington used the Sommers bros shafts on his T6,i seem to recall they were around £800,that was a good few years ago.

My 2.5 Vitesse snapped a shaft on the 2012 RBRR going up a hill at about 40mph,as Nick described it was at the keyway and the wheel and brake drum ended up in a ditch.I went CV rather than a new shaft.

Poor thing never stood a chance, never considered bending as well.  
 

I spoke to the guy I bought the car off. He told me he had bearings fail on that side in the past.  Wonder if that did some damage?

True dat..... They’ve done ok though as many will be well outside their design life now.

Thankfully not, I decided to put a bit of load on it and twat it with a deadblow hammer and it popped off... with a bit of a bang.  Flange looks good still.  I decided it was a calculated risk as a spare flange.

Not the best thing to do but have you seen how much it’s raining.  I decided I am not leaving the house today.  To wet!

Hello Ian

                It looks like the weld was the cause as the rest looks ok a bit worn were the needle rollers run.

Here are some photos of mine that failed and the better made ones you can see the splines look rolled on the better made ones and it fit further in to the yoke.

The N/S one has done 8000+miles and the O/S one about 6000miles

So I think they are ok

Those look very nice Roger. Price is pretty steep but probably reasonable for the bits included as a limited run.
