michaeljf Posted July 22, 2020 Author Posted July 22, 2020 Hello, Well a bit more foward motion. The main bearing studs are ARP 206-5401 BMC A series main stud kits (2), the big end bolts are ARP 200-6208 (2 sets). The bridging block has been machined (photo earlier) to clear the A series studs. All bearings plastigaged and in spec. All studs, bolts and washers treated with the supplied ARP assy. lube and torqued to their specs. All moving parts lubed with an assy. lube (will post the name next time). Regards,Michael.
michaeljf Posted July 24, 2020 Author Posted July 24, 2020 Hello, Nick, I am hoping for a bit more than that when it's finished (might put it in a TR6 and head to my local....track). Couple more photo's one didn't come out). In what was the second photo is the assy.lube as we couldn't get the first choice. More soon (I hope,.....still waiting for the head) Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted July 30, 2020 Author Posted July 30, 2020 Hello, A bit more foward motion. Sump and it's baffle test fitted and ready to go (from a plan from John). Also the timing chain cover with new bits and new oil pump (with modified internals) AND 10mm headed bolts!!Rimmers! Regards,Michael.
michaeljf Posted August 6, 2020 Author Posted August 6, 2020 Hello, Well a bit backwards and a little bit foward. more on rimmers!! as you will see from a photo, the new rimmers (don't deserve a capital) the crank sprocket gear must be made of.... anyway used the old one. Had to machine them both to line up with the vernier cam gear and the crap from rimmers is so soft (in photo) so machined the old one and REALsteel ! Now waiting for head! Regards,Michael.
sparky_spit Posted August 7, 2020 Posted August 7, 2020 That is atrocious!! I particularly admire the nice sharp burrs on the rear facing teeth edges and the fact that each tooth looks slightly different to the others in profile. It's good that you have an engineering mind and know what's good and what's crap; someone with less knowledge would be fooled into using this sort of thing without a second thought.
Nick Jones Posted August 7, 2020 Posted August 7, 2020 Total rubbish! Hope you’ve emailed them demanding a refund! A negative attitude (you’ll have to send that back first) might tend to support the theory I’ve seen put forward that they send their crappiest looking parts to furthest corners of the world to discourage returns. You might want to mention that if they are inclined to argue! 2
michaeljf Posted August 8, 2020 Author Posted August 8, 2020 Thanks all, Will certainly be having a word with them.....but the worrying part is I have some more of their parts fitted... Regards,Michael.
michaeljf Posted August 15, 2020 Author Posted August 15, 2020 Hello, Oops it wasn't rimmers (sorry). Checked my invoices and it was from...... Have sent them an email and NO response yet so will give them a little more time. So on to finishing the gearbox. Putting the OD back on currently ,then will be ready to test (new upgraded syncro rings, springs, checked clearances etc. Regards,Michael. (The number of dots after from represent the name of the shop).
PeteStupps Posted August 15, 2020 Posted August 15, 2020 I love a puzzle. As I have learnt, everyone sells some sort of rubbish. It's a strange ritual, which teaches classic car owners to be ever vigilant for the quality of parts. They're actually doing us a favour, you know. 1
michaeljf Posted August 17, 2020 Author Posted August 17, 2020 Hello, Well it's about a week and two emails and no response. It was the trshop. I also bought an oil pump from them which I modified the internals and removed the large casting ''dags"from the oilways, the fixing bolts are thinner and have a 10mm head! but the thread screws in. Two of my harmonic dampers, one off this motor and a "new"one. Regards,Michael.
sparky_spit Posted August 17, 2020 Posted August 17, 2020 More unusable rubbish.... or maybe they think that is a performance upgrade? If you took that at face value you would end up running 2 degrees advanced on ignition timing!
michaeljf Posted August 17, 2020 Author Posted August 17, 2020 Hello, Possibly but which one is telling the truth? Will find out a little later.... . Regards, Michael.
Nick Jones Posted August 17, 2020 Posted August 17, 2020 Which one indeed.......? One might hope the new one - but I wouldn't bet on it!
michaeljf Posted August 18, 2020 Author Posted August 18, 2020 Hello, My thoughts as well...A couple of pictures of the gearbox. Any comments on the remote linkage bit? Finally got a reply from the trshop. Regards,Michael.
Nick Jones Posted August 19, 2020 Posted August 19, 2020 Don’t remember that steel plate that looks like a Herald door lock striker plate being present on any I’ve seen before? Is the overdrive resistant to being fired? Lining the two sets of splines up can be a right pain. Was the TR shop response a useful one?
michaeljf Posted August 20, 2020 Author Posted August 20, 2020 Hello Nick, Under the "Herald plate" is a rectangular hole that gives a view of the three rods!. Unsure of Ïs the o/d resistant to being fired". Lining up the two splines was a bit of a pain. The TR Shop has offered a refund on the crank sprocket. Regards, Michael.
Nick Jones Posted August 20, 2020 Posted August 20, 2020 Bloody auto-scramble..... fired = fitted (and yes, it tried to do it again)
michaeljf Posted August 21, 2020 Author Posted August 21, 2020 Hello Nick, Hope not, just got to that stage and it was time to go home so hope it is happy to mate up to it's other "half"when I get back to it. Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted August 29, 2020 Author Posted August 29, 2020 Hello, Altimers? has a good grip on me! My son had moved my "stuff"around the workshop when I was building the g/box o/d etc, before the one step foward/back start and I couldn't remember if I had put the bushes the right way round in the gears so after a dismantle, I had! so all back together again and waiting to connect the o/d! Still waiting for head but apparently there is progress, recessing the valve spring (Cooper S) seats to get right tension on springs, (to suit the o/s Datsun valves). Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted September 4, 2020 Author Posted September 4, 2020 Hello, Sorry about the lack of foward motion on the motor! Head is supposed to be back with me by Friday the 11th. I have put the gearbox/od back together. I have fitted "uprated syncro" rings new springs/balls, replaced a selector fork and a general check of measurements . You might notice my "different" gearbox mount and re-drilled tailshaft bolt holes (wouldn't fit the TR tailshaft with original holes). Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted September 9, 2020 Author Posted September 9, 2020 Hello, Have been getting more bits ready to fit to motor. Surprising how long it takes to get things how one wants them. The stainless heater pipe my nephew made foe me,the alloy water pump was given and I have modified it a bit to fit and the bleed screw in thermostat housing, a 78 c thermostat. Next to modify one of those manifold gaskets to fit the head when I get it back. Mate that I pit crew for will be in Nowra (where the head is) 120 kms away on Friday getting the electrics wired in his newly restored TR4 so IF the head is ready he will bring it back. Regards,Michael.
sparky_spit Posted September 9, 2020 Posted September 9, 2020 Nice to see that your nephew created some flared ends on the stainless pipes where the hoses will fit. Mine didn't have those and it was impossible to keep the hoses on as the water pressure eventually blew them off, regardless of how many or how tight the hose clips were.
michaeljf Posted September 30, 2020 Author Posted September 30, 2020 Hello, I am still here just havn't had any progress to report on. The head man is supposed to be dropping the head off in about two hours....... but has just informed me that the roller rockers that I purchased as 1:6 ratio are in fact 1:73 and would be putting too much pressure on springs/cam? so another step rearwards till I sort it! Will get full info and post it here. Regards, Michael.
michaeljf Posted October 3, 2020 Author Posted October 3, 2020 Hello, A few photo's of the head. Datsun stainless valves, Cooper S valve springs, viton stem seals, more info to follow. Regards, Michael.
