Hello All

I have fitted an air idle valve the same as Mike(Ford Fiesta)

The Bosch one I had on before was sticking and the cheap Chinese copy of it let to much air through.

I did have to change the way I fitted it as I had the air coming in on the solenoid side of the valve which was ok until it went down to small opening then I had valve chatter(frightened the life out of me for a moment as I thought some thing had let go on the engine)

Now it is fitted the correct way around I can adjust it down to 500 rpm and just stalling when warm(800/850 is what I aim at) and open it up and get about 2000 rpm so there is enough air getting through

I am not going to use the separate air filter now just plumb it into the main air box

That's very neat, I had to modify the adjustment to get the minimum air flow down for my engine but now works perfectly (if a bit noisy must try changing the base frequency).

Just back from thrashing the Herald around the NCR500 (with some extra roads to make NCR850). Car was fabulous, could not believe just how well it now goes. Tempted to put it on a rolling road to see whats its producing.

Hello All

I decided to use the separate air filter instead of making a hole in the air box.

I seems to work much better than the Bosch and certainly gives less air flow on closed position.

One of the things I found was I had to increase the idle duty steps at higher temperatures for starting as it was not leaking so much air as the Bosch one or the engine would not start without a touch of throttle(which should not be needed if set right)

In my case I found about 45% was about right (may need a bit more tweaking?) closed is 25% and when idling is about 30/35% for 825/850 rpm

25% gives about 550 rpm so it closes enough all though there is a slight bleed when off(this may vary on different valves?) I bought cheap on Fleabay so not a Ford one but only about £12.50 delivered!

I am hoping this has cured my random high tick over?

I seems as though it buzzes a bit more at low % open! I think I will put in test mode again and set it at 30/35% and leave it for 30+ mins to see if it gets hot!

I may buy a spare at that price?

Hello All

I have another play this afternoon.

I tweaked the Idle duty steps for different temperatures on starting.

I aimed at 200/250rpm more than the closed loop idle control gives at those temperatures as it settles back to loop settings after a few seconds and it seems to work(you can play for ever!)

When the engine is at full working temperature (180 deg F) the idle duty is 36%

So I put it in test mode(engine off) and set it at 36%(were it will spend most of its life!) and left it on for about 1 hours and kept checking the temperature of the coil.

At 1 hour it was 26 deg C or 80 deg F in old money so I do not think heat will be a problem?

But what I noticed (with the bonnet open) and ticking over I thought it was buzzing  but what it is I can hear the air being sucked in in pulses so sounds like buzzing!

More experimenting needed? It may be because I used a small tube size(12mm)

First I will try a long piece tube down to the air filter at the front I do not think it will affect the idle air control as it is only small amounts of air!

It all looks promising compared to the Bosch one(finer control) not sure you would have the same problems with a single throttle body and a plenum system?

have you tried in feedback control to control the tick over speed? Mine works fine and shutoff once its warm But I have noticed when it first starts there is a short delay before it opens (10 15 seconds) not sure why will need to go thru the software again. Sometimes I think there are too many options in Turnerstudio!

Hello Mike

I have set to control the tick over and it works because when the fan cuts in there is dip in RPM then it picks again

You need the set the valve to be open when first switched on then there will be enough air to start at a higher tick over and come down as warms up

Ps taking Spitty for a run today and a bit more autotune!
