richbike Posted January 1, 2016 Posted January 1, 2016 Hi folks, got a frankenstein job down here in Sussex. MK3 spitfire tub on a gt6 rotoflex chassis with a TR6 engine. I got it as a (rather expensive) nearly finished project. MOT'd, drives OK but drinks oil. I suspect valve guides so that will be on the list this year. So far after I got it back in March I've... fitted electric fan and botched a lighter fanboss replacement redone the dash so the gauges lights and buttons actually work fiddled endlessly with timing and carbs but the oil fouled plugs make it a bit futile Rebuilt one rear wheel bearing and UJ polybushed most of the rear suspension swapped in recon steering rack been gradually sourcing and replacing all the bits the bloke who did the project forgot to put back on! bought it on a bit of a whim but pleasantly surprised how good it is to drive, And remarkably comfortable.
Nick Jones Posted January 1, 2016 Posted January 1, 2016 Welcome. Sounds like an interesting (and well chosen) combination of parts that should produce a pretty rapid little car. Looks good too. As regards the oil burning, I feel your pain. I battled this on my recommissioned 2.5 PI. First thing to say is that if you engine has an external rocker feed (usually a braided hose running from the oil pressure switch area to the back of the cylinder head), take it off and throw it as far away as you can. Then fit suitable plugs/rearrange adaptors to block the resulting holes. Unless the rocker shaft and rockers are in very good order, these will often feed far too much oil to the top end of the engine and can lead to oil burning. That said, this would be about the only way that you'll get enough oil to the top end to cause significant oil burning via the valve guides. As standard, these engines don't get very much oil to the top end and don't have stem seals as they don't really need them. I wasted quite a bit of time and effort fitting stem seals and messing with breather system modifications. These didn't make any significant difference and the thing carried on slurping a litre or so every 500 miles, blowing smoke, fouling plugs and generally slobbering and chuffing like an old steam train. I remained in denial for a long time, partly because I got great figures on compression tests (195 -200 psi across all 6). In hindsight this was probably because the ring area was always awash with oil! Turned out that the bores were significantly rust pitted from a long period of standing. Is it a CP or CR prefix TR6 engine? Do you know what gearbox & diff are fitted? Transmission is somewhat marginal with the 2.5 fitted....... Look forward to more pics Nick
richbike Posted January 2, 2016 Author Posted January 2, 2016 Hi, Cheers for the info. I was rather enjoying being in de Nile but there is no rocker feed (thankfully) so I guess I'll have to look at the block. At least the OD works! More info and pics to follow Cheers Rich
richbike Posted January 2, 2016 Author Posted January 2, 2016 Hi again, Ill continue rambling on about the car in the members area. but its a MM engine so a 2500TC. TR6 my @r$£!
