Thanks for accepting me.l am one of the 60+ brigade with not a lot to do now but play with my toys . These ars at the moment a Jaguar c type replica and a lotus elan. Now with 2015 starting my fancy turns to something else. I've had some Triumphs 2000 2.5pi and I wondered what I could I do with a small chassis car.So l joined here to see what others are doing .I'll be watching learning and picking your brains

Looks like an interesting collection. You're clearly not a fan of originality, so I'm sure you'll be welcomed on here! I've got a well modified mk3 Spitfire with K-series engine, T9 'box, Subaru diff and twin wishbones at the back - so I look forward to seeing what you can inspire us with further and improve the breed.

Yes Nick it's all Jaguar .

I'll post some more pictures on other cars section later , meanwhile I'm wondering if anyone has ever used BMW M 50 or 52 engines ?

I do like the sound of a straight six.

M50 or 52 in a small chassis Triumph?  Probably too big.  I've seen pics of someone (in the Netherlands?) starting a BMW 4 pot conversion but don't know how far they got.

M50/52 has been fitted to a MK1 2000 saloon with some success but was a damn tight fit.  the 2.5 diesel has done done a couple of times to 2000 saloon and Stag.  Seems to go in easier but the torque eats diffs!

IMHO, if you want it to be robust and handle you'll have to re-engineer the back end as soon as you get much over about 120 bhp anyway. There are a number of solutions which have been used, but if you're quick, you might be able to get in on the group buy for a kit from NZ which will allow fitment of the R160 Subaru diff - have a search on here.

Quite apart from that though, the Spitfire is a light car and really needs a light engine. The only multi-cylinder option I looked at (but wasn't quite barmy enough to follow through with) is the AJPV8 used in the TVR Cerbera. As a 75 degree V8, they're extremely short and compact, weigh 125 kgs (10 less than a 4 pot Spitty) and will comfortably exceed 400 bhp. I even bought one, measured it up and started plans but in the end went with the more sensible K-Series approach.

I've had a Cerbera and it's a stunning engine. I just really don't know whether it's a sensible idea. Scrap that, I know it's not a sensible idea, but that does make it rather appealing :)

It's definitely not a sensible idea.....

Chris's Zetec SE has got to be pretty much the best swap other than being two cylinders short.

There is the Ford/Mazda V6 2.0 or 2.5 which is (I think) somewhat related to the SE 4 pot and bolts to MX5 or RX 7 gearboxes.

What's wrong with the old Triumph boat anchors anyway?

Agreed on it not being a good idea!!

TBH it wasn't a good idea in 1200kg of much more evolved TVR.

Zetec has it's benefits, but it's still a pretty hefty lump. That's why I went with the much lighter K-series. There're plenty of tuning options and it's a very lightweight lump. You can mate it to a T9 box with the Caterham bellhousing.

Was talking about Zetec SE which is the all alloy version used in Focus/Fiesta/Puma in 1.25, 1.4, 1.6 & 1.7VVT.  Weighs about 80kg. As used to great effect by Chris in his T6.

Apologies to David for thread drift....... fairly typical here!

Ahh, I wasn't aware that the little Ford engine was also a Zetec - I've had a 1.25 Fiesta and a 1.7 Puma in the past and they're a lovely revvy little engine, light too by the looks of it. A Yamaha design I thought. Sounds like a good option. Certainly more modern than the old iron block zetec from Mondeos etc.

Yes mate, the Zetec SE is the Yamaha engine. Very well designed and only 80Kg. the 1.25L is lighter still but I think they start with the same block with a different crank and lower capacity (smaller) sump so not much in it. Tuning wise everyone tunes the 1.6 as its got better torque with the larger capacity. The 1.7 did get tuned but the 1.6 is the better motor and falls nicely into the raceing under 1.6 cat. 210-230bhp n/a is the general race engine output @8,000rpm. Shawspeed do all the bits you need and has done some crazy turbo motors.
