spitfire6
Hi I paid 20 quid to the last forum without being asked to. To be a life time member I will need to pay more money? Cheers in advance, Iain.
GT6MK3
Iain, Your 20 quid would certainly have helped Dave keep the site afloat, and thus get us to where we are today. When we converted to a paid, well supported version of forum software, and a new more capable and well supported host, the cost structures changed bit, and that's when we started offering recognition for those members who supported the change. There's no actual tangible difference between being a paid or free member, just a small colour label, and the satisfaction of helping. I'm having a bit of a fight with the subscription module, should have that sorted out in a day or two (when the temperature here cools down!) but... Paid memberships since the move work on a simple "many hands make light work" theory. The first option is to become a Supporter. It's US$25, once ever. 30 or more people took this up when we moved to the new software, and we covered the capital cost of the software and options, moved our hosting, and put some in the bank to give us some certainty we can pay our way in the future. The second option is to become a Subscriber. It's intended to be an option normally only open to those that are already Supporters, and is a simple US$10 per 12 months. This option is there so ongoing users have a chance to help cover our ongoing costs. To keep our hosting as it is, and pay the ongoing software support costs and domain name costs etc, we need about 8 to 10 new Supporters a year, or about 20-25 Subscribers, or a combination not both. In other words, we need about US$200-250 a year. Realistically, it's under 50p a day. When we made the change, I was surprised how many people offered to pay part, or all, of the capital cost (You all know who you are, and you all rock!). I really didn't want the site to have a single benefactor though. We all get to spout off here without fear or favour, and having one or two people paying for the site might just jeopardise that. I set the "Supporter" bar at a pretty low US$25 simply because I reckoned there's enough of our members that wanted to keep the place around that wouldn't feel a pinch at $25. (Many hands...). I was very pleasantly surprised that everything got covered. As our hosting and support costs start to roll around again this year, I hope that those members feel we're worth another $10 each year, and that this joining and staying in that time feel we're worth supporting. One of my aims if we can get there is to move the hosting back to Europe, so we can improve upload times for UK/European members (and, ironically, slow mine!). Anyway... Given that you've supported the site in the past, if you do feel like supporting us ongoing, I reckon we can bend the rules and give you the opportunity to become a Subscriber without the normal requirement of becoming a Supporter first. We haven't got one yet, for 10 Dollars a year, you can be first! Sound fair? Craig

GT6MK3
Cheers Iain. I've had some stuff happening in the "real world" that's stopped me figuring how to fix the merchant/subscriber issue. I will get to it though. So I've done a manual upgrade. Congrats on becoming our second Subscriber. (I decided to put my money where my mouth is and go first while testing earlier in the week!). I'll have the software sorted by this time next week to give everyone else the opportunity to share the awesomeness of our select group Craig

GT6MK3
It's stinking hot here, too hot for concerted logical nerd work. The issue is that Paypal want be to have a business account to accept reccuring payments, but doing so would cost more than the benefit. I'm trying to figure out a better way, but it will take me (and the software developers) a little time. It's not something we need to solve straight away, there's enough in the kitty to keep us safe for the forseeable future, it's just a hedge against the future I'd like to finish. 31 degrees at 12:30 am here in my nerdcave/office. When I get it working I'll re-open the "Subscriber" floodgates! Craig
