1977Triumph Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Going for a rebushing and greasing of the rear end on the T2500 this weekend weather permitting (outside). Hopefully should reduce the "wtf is the back end doing" feeling. Also Anyone got any Stag or other type seats?? Jag or bimmer perhaps? Black preferably, my front seats are fubar'd
Nick B. Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Megajolt prep night. Last night in the workshop had one purpose - find out how to attach the triggerwheel sensor. When sensor is placed I will know where on the pulley the triggerwheel has to be, as the sensor has to point 9 tooth before the missing tooth when engineis at TDC First I knocked up a very rough template for at bracket (no points for aesthetics!) which can be seen here The triggerwheel had been attached with clamps, so could easily be adjusted so the sensor would point at ninth tooth. With this position, TDC would be appr. at third tooth Now - mark it - and leave it for the mad welder to attach to pulley while I am taking a well earned vacation under the sun waaaaay down south :-) The bracket will be fabricated when I get home again. Initial thought had been along the lines of some angled iron. I have deserted this thought when I saw the rough mock up. I might just make the bracket from heavy gauge iron without angles on it. This gauge should just about do it. Cheers Nick
Royboy66 Posted April 5, 2009 Author Posted April 5, 2009 Quiet night at work last night, so went home, fetched GT6 & angle grinder (cutting disc fitted) trimmed the return lip on the front arches a but more,so the tyres wont catch on fast yumps in the road! been for long drive on some bumpy lanes today, seems to have cured any tyre to arch contact! :)
Mother Teresa Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Good day today. Re-wired the new temperature and oil pressure gauges in place. Whipped out the monstrosity that was the dual oil pressure/water temperature gauge(sh#te!) Re-fitted the dash, tunnel cover supports, glove boxes. Oh- and I topped up the gearbox oil- took about 350-400ml :B. Took the car out for a quick spin and I don't want to tempt fate but, it is really running very nicely indeed ;D!
GT6Steve Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 I've spent the morning cleaning and painting a gearcase for what should be a very special box for the racer. I'm very tempted to paint the outside as well but hesitate to inhibit heat transfer. The surface grinder has a coupkle of hardened washers in it being ground down to required thickness but that's such a tedious chore I don't see it being done today I guess assembly will wait another day... Steve
spitNL Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Changed the front wheelbearings this weekend. I had noticed one front brake locking much earlier than the other side. :-/ When measuring the run-out one side was 0.15mm other side 0.4mm No wonder the brakes weren't even, but strangely there was no judder when braking or at any speed. The cause of the runout was a damaged hub. There was a slight lip which prevented the bearing from sitting squarly in the housing on the side with 0.15mm. Stupid of me not to have noticed this last time. :B I could't find anything wrong on the otherside, so installed a new hub. Runout is now 0.05 and 0.06mm. ;D Frederick
Dicky Blighter Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Fitted this lot: And also fiitted the stainless sports manifold and exhaust - was expecting problems with that as it is one of the Phoenx 4 to 2 to 1 to 2 systems that have had a bit of a slating for poor fit in some places but it went on no problem. Need to re-set the carbs now as engine breathes so much easier and at the moment I have to have some choke all the time. I am tempted to get a set of Andrew Turner carbs as throttle spindles and jet carriers are very badly worn on mine and by the time I've bought all the bits I need and tryning to find some spare time it's just as easy to get a set from him. I had a slight problem when I lifted the manifold away and 2 of the heater hoses split - they are 2 years old and have gone really brittle. I chopped the broken ends off so I could at least use them as a temporary fix and they have no reinforcement in them. Next up is the carbs and finish the Megajolt install but thaat may have to wait a couple of weeks.
SpitmkIIICPH Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Drove car home from welder sunday afternoon.... about 15kms (prevously only driven 1km to the MOT station) on the rebuilt engine.. no problems but temperature gauge goes a little to hot.... maybe the new radiator will help this once fitted. cleaned / primed rear screen frame (has had welding to the roof section) and will but a top-coat on tmrw so rear-screen can be put back in... Car is going to first club meet (in 4 years) on sunday... about 40 kms.. fingers crossed ;D I also dinitroled roof and rear pillar sections.
Mother Teresa Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Fitted a monstrous carbuncle of an after market electronic Tacho. It is only a very temporary item which sits on its little pedestal stand, in the open aperture for the ashtray in the dash top. This is in readiness for this weekend at Castle Coombe and the CT Trackday the folowing Friday. The gauge is a little 52mm cheap'n'nasty stepper gauge that set me back a whopping £5 on 'the bay'. Sadly, it isn't the most accurate of items. It under reads to about 1400rpm then progressively over reads to the extent that at 6000rpm indicated on the laptop via MJ, the comedy gauge says 6800rpm . Not all bad as that augers well for the sound test....
Royboy66 Posted April 24, 2009 Author Posted April 24, 2009 Day off, so I troiled me onions, and neased me gripples !! then went for a quick blast to check alls well. The Gunniess was cold ! 8)
DaveNotSoSideways Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Absolutely nothing I am a little disappointed with the peak power on my engine I have tested Co2 and cam settings and cannot find any more, I think the cams are a bit mild, they are done @ 6500. I have this "odd" urge to junk the cams, sell it off and the carbs and Megajolt etc. That'll make me a pretty penny back...Sell off all my Dellorto jets too and the Vernier pulleys, Piper Blanking kit. Basically just whip the top off the engine, the cam carrier plate and refit the VVC gear using an Emerald ECU to drive the VVC unit, ignition and injection, rewire the engine and add a few sensors. Refit the stock Plenum and throttle body and go back to a "stock" engine. Few days work. I didn't invest any time in the carbs, cams or any of that stuff, so I'd like to revert back to a "stock" setup. My cams are just 270 deg, the VVC opens to 290 and runs 225deg @ idle. I can get 175-180HP from it this way @ 7500 and have insane MPG, fk loads more torque and NEVER ever have to open the bonnet. I think during the period of doing this car my desires have changed. I think having a "ported out" and well tweaked "stock" engine will be the ticket for me and it's barely any work as I made sure the stock plenum would fit (if you cut the top off and rotate it 180 and have the TB at the front). Basically just bolting bits on after taking bits off. It's good and all that, don't get my wrong, but I have had enough of carburettors and pissing about with 2nd rate ignition systems. I want to just get it mapped and never open the bonnet again Looking for a another caterham manifold atm to make and test a 4-2-1 setup. When will all this get done...Who cares?
mark spit Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I fitted the set of GT plasma plugs on wednesday night. Tork car to work Thursday morning putting 30ltrs (with apologies to Mattius) of Morrisons finest (ahem!) 95RON unleaded in on top of whatever 98ron was in. The car has always been run on super as it was awful on the cheap stuff. Well with no changes at all she ran fine, plenty of midrange pull and not a sign of pinking, stutering ar hesiatation like I used to get on 95. Ran that down and put another 30Ltr of Tesco unleaded in. Still fine. Jobs a good one. Especially as my works fuel card will get 95 but not 98. They've paid for themselves already. 450 miles down, well happy. Cheers GT (clap) Mark
Mother Teresa Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 That's good to hear Mark- i'd forgotten all about the plugs! :B
lordleonusa Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I fitted the set of GT plasma plugs on wednesday night. I want to increase the C/R on my Vitesse, but the fuel here is rather crappy U.S. gasoline, rather low octane unleaded loaded with 10-15% ethanol, nitogen compounds and some MTBE or other similar crap. It goes bad and turns to varnish way to easily and quickly, so I have to add fuel stabiliser just to keep it usable! I've not had any pinking yet, but generally use the highest octane fuel I can get and my c/r is presently low at about 9.25 - 9.5:1 or thereabouts. These plugs may be vital idc. L
AndyGT6 Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I oiled my trunnions and replaced the greenstuff pads last weekend, I fitted a set of NOS asbestos pads. I'll see how these pads go, before I change to Mintex. I also have some Castrol Response fluid to go in as well. Yesterday I changed the carb needles and checked the set up. I've finally settled on what I think is the most suitable needle for my engine. The LC1 kit was then removed, and I gave the car a wash as well. Today I'll give it a quick polish and hoover out, ready for the day out at Cadwell next friday. I have noticed a couple of times that I get small puddles of fuel just behind the carb bridge, I have changed the needle valves but it still happens, so I've ordered a fuel pressure regulator (filter king type) as I'm wondering if the fuel pressure from the stock pump may be marginally high. I plan on fitting an electric pump soon, so the regulator was required anyway. Andy
Royboy66 Posted April 25, 2009 Author Posted April 25, 2009 Andy, out of interest, what needles have u now fitted ? Roy:)
AndyGT6 Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Hi Roy, I'm now running BDA needles & yellow springs, I was using BAM's but these were a touch rich at low speeds, and slightly weak at m/way speeds. Looking forward to giving the car a good run to Cadwell next friday ;D. Andy

L Hi Leon, As I didn't build my own engine I'm not 100% on the CR, somewhere between 165 and 175psi. Previously on 95 it was very poor below 2000rpm, last few days been able to potter along the flat in 4th, 30mph at around 1500-1600rpm, doesn't increase very well from there but it is a noticeable difference. Think the Morrisons 95 U/L is probably one of the poorest quality fuels (apols again Mattius). over here. Done 450 miles on the 95 and doing another 300 tomorrow. Cheers mark
lordleonusa Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I wonder if the plasma plugs have to 'bed-in' like the NGK Iridiums, which seem to run much better after the first 250 miles? PS. Did you know that Iridium comes from one BIG meteorite that hit the earth eons ago and distributed a layer of the stuff al over the planet? Cool Huh? L
JohnD Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Why do alternators give up, just like that. Took SofS out for a shakedown last weekend. Fixed the problems and this Saturday was MoT day. Battery flat. Hmmmm? Started on Power Pack, ok off we go - engine dies. Tried again and watched the fuel pressure die off, until at 80psi it wouldn't rev and then died. Multimeter out, and try again. Yes, the alternator is not charging, at all. OK; I do have a spare alternator, but it doesn't have the same sized pulley (It's smaller, that's good) but the fan belt is now too long. Dig out one from 'stock' that is OK, but the adjustment stay is now too long. Mr.MoT? I'm not coming. Make a new stay. Start up again - whoopee! Charging! But what's that smell. Fuel? Oh, ***** the T-piece for the fuel pressure guage is leaking. Tweak it tighter - and a fine spray emerges of Saudi's best. Connector off again, strip it, make up a copper washer and refit. We're dry and safe from fuel risks. Where's the day gone? I had about six things I was going to do. Not now. John
Nick B. Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Got triggerwheel attached to pulley /a little while ago - and managed yesterday to get pulley bolted on and install rad Cheers Nick
triumphlux Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Finally took the Spit out of winter hibernation, and my father gave me a hand in shifting a trailer full of stuff from one lockup to another much closer to my place 8) Car runs ok except that it pulls to the right when braking .... when the car was a heap of shit for 10 years I never had trouble with brakes, now 2 years after the restoration they start to make trouble : Will check tonight what the problem is, maybe scrap parts again ...
Nick B. Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Nice looking spit there. Love the number plate Cheers Nick
