Gerard Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Just finished painting the block. Done about half of the cylinder head.
Nick Jones Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Just finished painting the block. Done about half of the cylinder head. Come on! Thought you'd have it running by now Nick
Royboy66 Posted December 23, 2008 Author Posted December 23, 2008 gonna go for a drive 2mrw morning! if it starts! , the roads have dried up a bit today here! then wrap it up till im back on the 9th! 8)
Gerard Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 Come on! Thought you'd have it running by now Nick Nope. I'm missing the crankshaft dowel and the flange for the J-type OD.
SpitmkIIICPH Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Cleaned carbon/muck form pistons and fitted new rings... all done on the dining room table... all muck now gently resting under finger nails..... pondering where the ring gaps should be on the top two rings should be before i put them back in the block....
sorbs Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Washed and polished the car, drove it to my Parents' for Christmas, left it dripping ATF on their driveway for a couple of days while enjoying the festivities, drove home. Today I sorted out the rounded off screws holding the carburettor tops on, I've never actually taken the pistons out of those carbs so thought I should have a look inside. The diaphragms were in tatters so I cleaned everything up, fitted new ones and put it all back together. I'd like to report that there's a massive difference but it runs just as well on the new diaphragms as it did on the old shredded ones.........It probably is a little keener to respond to the accelerator but I remain unconvinced that the Stromberg diaphragm issue is half the problem it's made out to be.
Nick Jones Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I remain unconvinced that the Stromberg diaphragm issue is half the problem it's made out to be. It is when they've got holes in Tricky reassembling with baggy old diaphragms too, think sticking 2 week old calf back in the cow : Nick
Mother Teresa Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I've been soldering up the RVC tacho mod circuit board today. The plan is to test it in situ tomorrow. Some truly awful soldering but fingers crossed it'll do the trick. I daren't show the standard of work here for fear of being thrown off the forum for shoddy workmanship :B!. Also been fiddlin' with the new seat covers- they look bloomin' luvly ;D!
DaveNotSoSideways Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Sprayed my belt bar with black paint.
DaveNotSoSideways Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I daren't show the standard of work here for fear of being thrown off the forum for shoddy workmanship :B!. (hang) (tank) (behead)

Mother Teresa Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Only got one, and it's from the rear. Wait 'til you see the fronts!!!!! They are the very knees of the bees ;D! I can't wait to fit them, but the seats need a few tidy-ups achieved first. Much like fitting a carpet- I only want to do this once!
Mother Teresa Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 How many times do I have to tell you - that blowtorch is for PLUMBING! Nick :B It was reasonably successful- at least I managed to not burn the top of the new dining room table with my soldering iron( :). Sadly, the spare potentiometer made the supreme sacrifice as did a pen, when I left the soldering iron rest on them :X. Lovely afternoon though. Sat in the sun in the backroom, no-one else in the house. Listening to The Beatles, Prefab Sprout, Kings of Leon and The Beach Boys whilst murdering the soldering .
Nick Jones Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Ah, empty house - is that the married man's dream? I think it might be (one of them anyway) Get yourself a soldering iron stand - very useful for preventing collateral damage and an unrivalled opportunity to get funny stripy burnmarks on your hands..... (I'm sure you don't need to ask how I know that :) Nick
newguy Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 I Put the bonet back on, cleaned all the interior out with compressed air, fitted my recond speedo, cleaned wheels, cleaned carbs, and washed filters. Dried and reoiled. Been hunting for a fuel pressure gauge, and looking for a oilpressure gauge for my cooling system. I also started thinking that i would make a new panel for my fuel pump switch and starting button that i could put the gauges into.
GT6Steve Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Well I just wrote up a nice treatise on progress on the racer and then lost it somehow, button challenged I presume... I was simply saying that it's running great and I'm working on data aquisition to try and get some valid data from our opener at Cal Speedway in early March. Gotta get the water pump slowed or sorted as the sustained WOT at Cal Speedway cavitates and overheats the engine. Looking at trying a crappy machined impellor from Racetorations but I can't find the drive pulley I had on it before. I had it as a spare, never tested it and then tore it apart again to use the bearing somewhere else. Now I've got nothing and have to reinvent the product...And I'm damned happy to be back in race mode! ;D
DaveNotSoSideways Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Back and Forward buttons can sometimes save you when that happens. Shame about your innovate thing, I've seen a few working perfectly. Happy tinkering. Looking forward to having a working object to tinker with!
starman Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Swapped engines in my '78 Spit. "New" one is 9.6:1, 1514 cc/0.020" overbore, "big valve" head (p/n 218139), mod'd combustion chambers, 3-angle grind valves, "B" cam (280 duration, 0.409" lift), balanced. Looking forward to being over with break-in as this thing wants to go. Working on Megajolt for this engine.
SteveA Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Not had much of a chance to do anything towards my GT6 recently, probably something to do with the fact that I am in Cambridge at the moment and the GT6 is in South Wales : I did manage to get a step closer with the Megajolt though, as I have been able to drill, tap and fit the takeoffs on my spare inlet manifold. Been having great fun though just going out and driving the old saloon, taking trips out to Canterbury, Burton on Trent and London.
Nick B. Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Not much really. Changed the clutch master cylinder with a new (NOS with new seals) Nothing particular wrong with old unit, just eliminating possibilities for errors in relation to my grinding gearboxprobs. Everything from the MC to the gearbox is getting a going over once more. The clutch slave cyl is a new repro unit - will try and swap it with a used but good unit. Pulled of the old lucas dynamo and swapped it for a modernish generator (not a nippon denso - must be another time) Cheers Nick
DaveNotSoSideways Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Grit blasted my gearbox tunnel, just awaiting a "warm" day to paint it! Need to find some yellow paint too to mix up some ivory.
