I didnt believe cults existed...

Recommended Posts

I honestly didnt think cults existed but im begining to question it now.

Hope Im not offending anyones religion, im just shocked by this

Talking to a certain person, she was telling me her church beliefs, im mortified by half of these. I can understand catholosism just about. But this is just nuts.

I mean she is told shouldnt dress too provocatively, shouldnt drink to excess, should preach gods will to others. The people appear to be encouraged to pray segregated, there is a mens prayer club and womens prayer club.

I listened to some of the sermons, going on about if people dont speak gods word they will not live a prosperous life, the guy claims that he did not have enough faith to save one of the parishoners from cancer, claims that he has saved people are demonised...

I mean to people actually believe in this? and what kinda religion tells people what to wear.

Heck aye!! They are all over the place, ranging from the almost sane (by comparison) to the outright bizare! Yours sounds reasonably sane to me.

There was one that hit the news down in the Borders a few years back, believed that they had to get baptised in a river naked. Only problem was, they tried doing it in the middle of winter!! It kinda fell apart after one of the group died from severe hypothermia (they all believed the person was having a divine intervention or something  ::) ).

One that hits the news all the time just now, allthough most people would not think to classify it as such is the muslim extremists.

In a broad sense all those bizare "Christian" groups (Quakers, Mormon's etc etc) are essentially cults as well, just that now we are conditioned into believing that they are normal and to be accepted. However try investigating what they actually stand for, and some of their "worship" rituals, some fucked up stuff there!!

Not really that complicated.

The major religions all originate from well before our modern society. Catholicism/Islam/Judaism etc... are all one big school book for the uneducated masses with simple rules:

Don't shag about (you'll catch something - until someone invents the rubber sheath)

Don't eat raw pork (you'll feel really ill - until someone invents the fridge freezer)

Don't nick stuff (well cut you hands off... unless it's for the collective, then that's OK)

Don't kill people ('cos we can't convert them to our religion)

Add a bit of bluster, a few legends (Ok, lies) and the whole thing becomes a self propagating meme.

It been going on forever... You know, the "tribe X don't know that they have to paint their noses blue every second Wednesday during Autumn, they're not OUR kind of people"

Creates a group identity, and you can explain everyday occurrences with the simple phrase "it's God's will".

You can probably tell I'm not religious...  ;)

I know this girl of 26. She is stunning. The body the face but sadly I got to her too late. She's now taken up the church and the chances of a relationship or the least some nookie have gone down the pan.

A workmate took her along to a church meeting. I was too late to save her for me... The church of Martin liking slim hot girls.

Shocking!

Monday Pm, BBC Radio4, there's a regular programme on religious issues - can't remember the name.  I tend to have R4 on all the time in the modern, and I'm driving between workplaces then so I hear this prog.  It's format is to bring experts into the studio for a debate, no audience.

This week, it was about faith schools, and were they an influence for good or bad.

One panellist said that his school taught statistics and probability, because they had to for the Maths and Science syllabus.

"But of course it's not true.  God never allows anything to happen by chance.  So we teach that too." (I paraphrase)

People can believe what they like, that they can be cured by prayer, should follow odd diets, any manner of thing that affects their own life, but to warp science or education is surely a sin!

John

PS Just rememberd the prog. title.  It's "Beyond belief".  And it is.

I suppose i've had blinkers on not to realise it happening around me, but this shit is heavy, i fail to understand how a young relatively intelligant person can get pulled into that crap and actually believe it.

Funnily enough, as you probably guessed, she got told to get to f***, rational human beings don't believe in all that shit even religious ones, i have a lot of respect for people who believe and have faith, but when those views goto the extremes of telling you what to wear and how to enjoy yourself that aint any normal religion that is a cult.

Even more worrying is that having re-read your OP Matt, I would have to say that your 'friend' is very much at the sane end of the cults, sounds like an evangilistic viewpoint to me. No doubt they did all the happy clappy hoohaa in their services as well??

The opposite end of the spectrum is very scary to imagine.

On an issue closer to home, try having someone like Dave deciding to create a group of like-minded individuals to follow his way of life in totality. You get someone like that, with huge amounts of energy and an ability to use the english language, a lot of people cannot stand up to that, and so go along with it instead, because that is the easier option. After living in this lifestyle for a while you become used to it, it becomes the norm. You see where I am going? That is how to start a cult! Once your followers have become normalised, you can then start taking them further from the truth, take it slowly and you think, well that is not so different from previous, you never realise you are on a diverging path the whole time.

Same process that got us Kings and Queens, gorvernments, dictators etc etc.

My apologies to Dave by the way, I in no way mean to demean you or suggest you are trying to start a cult, however you make a good example due to your mainc energy!!

Cheers,

Phil

That was the whole point Phil! Some meglomanic like me is RUNNING you. Everyone, somewhere.

I'm pondering a life change atm, people in my situation often look for answers, in the wrong places.

Discovered the perfect job for a person like me, outgoing, easily bored, socially astute, adaptable, unlimited, can play to anyones level, happy with peasants or royality, unfazed.

I should be an "escort"? Corperate companion/monkey for rich ladies etc. Corperate company. I can use all my sociopathic skills and I need nothing bar my personality and to turn up. Get to go shows, art galleries, races.

It's a tyler durden job innit. Anti-Christs work .

You're all pawning yourself off innit.

i would post the links to the sermons, they are funny, even more funny by the way that people actually believe the twaddle some 24yr old preacher is trying to tell you the meaning of life, and that the congregation should use the likes of facebook and twitter to endoctorate people.

Endoctrinate, like communism....what is the boredom like in communism? I can't even keep occupied and contented with all the tools of capitalism/freedom before me, it's the earning of money I have issue with, I don't find it motivates me, as a sole motivator.

Lots of people need guidences.

I can do anything I put my hand to, problem is the extreme ADHD gene makes me wanna do a bunk the moment it gets boring/plus my ever changing mentality, I'll go manic and try to run everyone or get so down I can't be fucked with anything, moods make me "unemployable". Worse thesedays you need forms/paper bolox to walk a dog.

Makes me an ideal candidate to setup a new religion.

Go for it, could be fun!  Personally, the enforced socialising and late nights would wear me out.

I got accosted by a couple of God botherers whilst out for a stroll a few weeks ago, they really were brainwashed, trying to preach to passers by, and just couldn't grasp the concept that I didn't believe in or want to waste my time listening to them talk about their so called god.

Know what you mean.

I'd be looking at that for 2-3days a week max, couldn't deal with acting fulltime. Saying that, now I'm fit I've got perma-excess energy again.

It's boredom I fear most, repitition, it removes your hope :)

These religious things give the hopeless hope, that's why people are easily swayed....

A long distance driving job is good for manic ADHD types, control of a vehicle, control of your mood, noone annoying you, your own work space, hope you'll see something interesting, driving is good for us, and you're out and about.

It's people who don't fit in with the tight lines of society that become naturally dishearted, more every-year?

I know all about it.

People find solice in religion, I don't, it's illogical, they seem to like it though.

On another forum a religous "cult" said that abolish gays and AIDS would not be a problem. Well my son was gay and I would defend him and his friends unreservedly.

This particular chap was a "creationist" Christian and an elder in his church which meant he had swallowed the great book of fiction otherwise known as the Bible totally.

To him Darwin was a fool and wrong, there was no such thing as evolution and the Earth is only 6000 years old FFS!

He had allies though.

It took me and some others who joined me two months to nail him with logic and common sense.

The religionists constantly try to deflect away when you have them on the ropes but in the end he admitted that there were Dinosaurs on the Ark and that Noah had managed to collect all animals even though they were on different continents and that there was indeed evolution finally he stormed off defeated by logic, however he still believes his brand of nonsense.

They talk of love but hate gays, who are an abomination (they like woman on woman however).

Women are not fit to run a business (my daughter has a degree in busines studies and runs her own) and my wife runs the house like clockwork.

I am a fool because I am an atheist and have been since I was 7 years old when I was told by a teacher that I was too young to be one and I replied that in that case I was too young to be a Christian (yes I will always argue).

Hah! I've shot through boredom a long time ago, and am currently comfortably nestled in apathy of the purest kind.

(eek) does cheap wine help achieve this state of mind.....  I could probably fall into a similar condition but my employer and domestic management prevent it....  :(

Religion is just another way of escaping from reality or abdicating responsibilty.....  I work on the principle of "I don't bother him and (hopefully) he don't bother me.

It's sad isn't it. Apathy and boredom relief is a nightly problem for many men.

I walk alot atm, just been 3miles, 2 miles earlier.

I brought 6 books yesterday for 1-3£ each. I'm gonna start reading more real books, it focuses you.

So many men around, drinking, smoking, they are men who should be the top active alpha types usually, just working class and worn out, looking well miserable, just using that stuff to keep in a state of apathy, I know what it's like. It's rampant, cause when you got excess energy and are fit it brings problems the other way. Outlets.

I've done the drinking, smoking shit, it's part of my profile 101, manics seek solice in medication, at the worst points it gives you a lift, gives you control, as a full manic I know why to a lesser degree everyone has manifestations of my own issues/feelings with everything they do and feel, just not on my voltage, just within their band, to a lesser degree.

I'll be the fitest person in my peer group right now, easy, fitter than 10 of some of them combined, they are all smoking, drinking or doing no real exercise.

Honestly they bore me to death, not people just their lifestyles of "given up". New TV, Stereo. Entertainment for the chairdweller.

Alot of people haven't given up and are just in a state of mild apathy.

It's just a scale.

Giving up nicotine was a total headfuck for me, still swinging more. I can look at most working class smokers and I can see in many cases the fags are the only thing holding their entire mental structure together, serously, right on the limits before they have a breakdown, they use that shit as a full on medication, it works, it'll help you through any mental issues, giving you a lift, and a relief. The cold hard reality could be too much to take for many every-night drinkers, smokers and whatever.

I feel it sad we need to use this shit at all. I'm going pure.

I reckon it Bruce is right, but my manic moods make it hard for me to deal with people day in day out, fitness instructor or something fitness related as a career, active, probably my best chance if I went into employment. Fuckers want to infect me with Lithium, which would help me, maybe but not if I work out, it's got effects on energy, liver, it's nastyshit, testing you all the time. I'd rather be run over than needled and fucked with all the time.

It's been a long time since I was completely pure and on a solid diet and felt actually able to move on. I tried to quit smoking a few times but I'd become really fucking nuts. I'm through that now but I know when I get nuts the first thing a manic nut job looks for is relief.

I may take the advise of the nutjob general in Doctor Stranglelove and keep a bottle of pure grain alcohol handy, I reckon a shot a day is beneficial.

Bar nicotine that puts me back where I was at 19, on my bike, fit, free and using the odd shot of whiskey.

Booze is the only drug that doesn't make you more alert, it dampens you, maybe that's what I need thesedays. Like everyone else  ;D

Costs too much anyway. Fuck it. Stick to water.

See I'm a manic, who knows what I want, I don't, it'll be something else soon in 5minutes or a month or something.

This is why people do it, to avoid the realities :)

Heard of Pascal's Wager?

With enormous French cynicism, Pascal reckoned that, while there is no way to prove that a god exists, it is worthwhile living your life as if there was one, because the benefits in the afterlife would be enormous.

Clearly, there was no Lottery when he was alive.

I once said as I left my mothers house with my wife and children aboard, "Lucifer bless this chariot and take us home safely" ;D my mum was worried and said so  :) I will never ever believe in any God and also do not believe superstition, your life will come and pass, as will good and bad luck. And as sure as the sun rises one day you wont be here to see it and the wildlife will eat you whether in the ground or burnt your life force will be broken up and shared out to start again.

That is reincarnation.

"You dont need me, you are all individuals"......."YES WE ARE ALL INDIVIDUALS"

Dave get yourself on adultwork.com and register as an escort and go play with those bored women ;D it would suit your personality as you could try all sorts of mind games on them.

Books are good.

As for booze, it's a good, enjoyable thing but as with everything, moderation is the key.  Christ knows (or does he?) I've been alarmingly drunk more times than I can remember and wouldn't change that but now, I prefer to enjoy a few drinks and still wake up feeling fresh the next day.  Now I tend to enjoy the drinks themselves rather than the act of getting drunk. Must be getting old................The thing with booze is knowing when to stop.  The first drink is enjoyable, so you have another with the expectation that each drink will leave you feeling better than the last.  Next thing you're nusring a hangover......... :)

Smoking?  Never seen the appeal, never really enjoyed it.
