GT6 Nick Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Triumph gearboxes connect to their driveshafts with a flange, but Ford Type 9 gearboxes instead have a sliding spline. I bought a Sierra driveshaft to modify for my Type-9'ed GT6, but instead of a UJ, it had a thumping great rubber donut like a rotoflex coupling. It can't be changed for a UJ, the splined section goes straight to a three-legged yoke (see below). So, a question for those who've fitted Type 9 gearboxes, what models of car have the correct spline fitting on the front of their driveshafts, and UJs? I've read of people using Escort and Hillman Hunter shafts, and have found a Mk2 Escort shaft on eBay - but would Escort UJs be strong enough for a modified 2L, and are they replaceable? What about Triumph 2.5 autos? I think they had spline tailshafts - is the splined shaft the same size? They'd certainly be strong enough for a GT6. Oh yeah, the rear of the Type 9 has been removed so I can 'cut and shut' the remote selector.
Johnc Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 I'm doing a type 9 conversion on my 1360 and have a Crapri which has a UJ on the end. I'm obviously not looking at so much power from my mildly modified 1300 engine but I'm sure that if you got a prop from a 2.8i it would be man enough for the job. Cheers John C
DaveNotSoSideways Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 Dunno what my prop is, came from Frontline with a 2nd hand kit. The end piece that slips into the box is used on all Caterhams too, even 300HP+ ones, so I don't think it's weak. Caterham uses the Ford Diff and Ford Box...Looking there is the best answer? The props the caterham use look the same as the Triumph kit ones in the size of the joints etc....
hrgserv Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 New prop for type 9 is £110+vat from frontline, ready to go, used two now no problem at all, its not worth messing about

bobyspit Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 I got mine made up for the box, new was about a ton. Ford front and Triumph rear
GT6 Mike Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Nick I used Dave Mac propshafts in Coventry, they will make one to measure and have all the new parts on the shelf, cost is around £120. They will need the measurement from the face of the diff flange to the back of the gearbox. The may be able to supply the joints and yokes and you get the prop made over there. 1 Northey Road Foleshill Coventry CV6 5NF Telephone: (024) 7668 3239 Fax: (024) 7658 1852 johnmac@davemacprops.co.uk
GT6 Nick Posted October 7, 2009 Author Posted October 7, 2009 Thanks for the ideas guys. There are a couple of avenues open at the moment. Firstly, I could buy a front yoke from Canleys or Dave Mac - thanks for the links. With the correct components, I can get the driveshaft made up here in Australia - it won't be hard to find a flange for the Subaru diff in Oz, but they never sold Sierras here and damned few Capris, Escorts etc, so Type 9 flanges are rare. Secondly, I'm heading back to New Zealand (where English cars were a dollar a dozen when I was a lad) in November, so I can hunt for a Hunter, Escort or Capri shaft there, chop it behind the front UJ and bring the front section back in my luggage. I've gotten weirder things through Customs...
