flatter4 Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 OK I've got 2 Nippon Denso starters. One from a Toyota Corolla and one from a Camry. The main bodies are the same, but the noses are different. I've posted my questions on a new thread as it wasn't really relevant to the previous one: http://www.sideways-technologies.co.uk/forum/Blah.pl?m-1258037392/s-15/ Will Columbine offered to identify whether I had left or right handed - Are you there Will? Additional question on using these: - Will the Canley's kit work with either of the units I have? - I am just fitting a new ring gear to the flywheel, and wondering about which side to put the chamfered gear teeth..... The Nippon Denso has the pinion pulling in from the opposite side of the ring gear to the original Bendix type. Should I reverse the ring gear - or leave as original so I can always go back to the Bendix type if necessary? Thanks in anticipation of your considered responses! - I will post the other picture separately.
tim_trinda Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Will Columbine offered to identify whether I had left or right handed - Are you there Will? You can check the type of starter you have here http://www.canleyclassics.com/products.asp?article=torquekit.xml The Camry starter doesn't look like it will fit, the gear is too far out. The Corolla one looks right, the pinion should have 9 teeth. ======

The Nippon Denso has the pinion pulling in from the opposite side of the ring gear to the original Bendix type. Should I reverse the ring gear - or leave as original so I can always go back to the Bendix type if necessary? On my GT6 I reversed the ring gear to help the pinion engage because the starter pinion is just a plain gear with no chamfers. Some starters have chamfers on the pinion teeth some don't. =========
Nick Jones Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 The Camry one is no good for your purpose (2L car I think). The Corolla one should be OK. Canley do kits for both LH and RH and there used to be a guide on their website to help you identify which one you have...... hopefully it's still there. Nick
flatter4 Posted December 7, 2009 Author Posted December 7, 2009 Thanks for your help guys. I had looked at the Canley site before: noticed the pictures, but not bothered to read the text properly! I will keep the Camry starter for spares - as the electrical side looks the same. I'm still debating on the ring gear: - Optimise for the new starter, and fit it back-to-front or - Refit as original so I can always revert to the Bendix if need be
Oracle Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Mine went straight on, no need for kits, was off an Isuzu Trooper 2.6i Diesel. Skimmed the stock spacer about 3mm.
