GT6_sleeper Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Dave what about the MGF 160 and 180 ap racing 4 pots im sure you must have looked into this when doing yours?
DaveNotSoSideways Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 No idea mate. You could use them on the back? If you did the CV conversion and retained the stock MGF brakes/upright? I was intending to do just that next winter. I took the best option off the shelf for the front, saved hassle etc.
DaveNotSoSideways Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 See Canley's now list a kit on their website. I see his aim is to sell the discs/calipers at basically cost and make all the money selling the pads. Well the basic AP/Mintex M1122 (I think) are awful, Canleys basic ones. No feel, nothing between locked up and not locked up. No bite they let down the whole kit. Dunno why Caterham supply them cause they are awful, everyones first re-re-upgrade for the BB kit on blatchat, com is to dump the stock pads for Pagid. The Mintex are the only ones to use. 180! You must be MAD. Performance Braking Singleton Court Business Park, Wonastow Road, Monmouth, Monmouthshire. NP25 5JA UK Tel: +44 (0)1600 713117 These guys will sell you the Mintex for 90£. Or VASTLY superior Pagid RS14 for 165£. The Mintex cost peanunts from PB in Monmouth. Paying 180£ for some 1144 you'd be insane. Asking for pads in the pattern of the latest Caterham AP calipers you can actually get about 13 types of pad. Like the adjustable top wishbones, but looking at the "welding" I'd rather use the stock ones! Someone show those MIG monkeys a TIG for gawd sake.
GT6 Nick Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Where are they getting the calipers from? Once we know that, we can source our own pads. The rest of the big brake kit looks alright though.
Nick Jones Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 So where are you seeing this stuff....? Been looking on their site and not seeing .......(blind, stupid :X) Nick
spitNL Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 So where are you seeing this stuff....? Here you go: http://www.canleyclassics.com/?xhtml=xhtml/product/4potbrakes.html&xsl=product.xsl It's in the "new products" department. Cheers, F.
Oracle Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 They look just like the AP's caterham use without the caterham emboss on the side and plastered in horrid red paint. Pistons same size 38.1mm x4. Discs look to be genuine AP, which is good cause they are high quality. You'll need some decent hex bolts to hang them and also hex bolts for the discs. Ask for pads for the latest AP Caterham Caliper?, looks the same as I have. The fact he mentions the AP pads means the stock G-tech Mintex I guess, have M1122 or something on them. They are awful, can't wait to change them. Caterham owners report MASSIVE change when moving to 1144 and a another quantum leap if using RS14. You just cant use those cheap pads, like driving on wood, less bite than the stock brakes using 1144 they will also fade badly if you actually have a fast car on track. Obviously you'll hear other sides to that coin, but anyone who states they are even worth fitting for a laugh can't drive and has no concept of how brakes should feel! Those brake caliper mounts look lush though Critic is finally paying off, rather than some arse-up job they have used some CAD for a change Just pigeon-shit welding to remedy next. Shame the CAD etc wasnt used before to produce something better ;/ think the boat has been missed. Can't fault my Caterham brakes bar the pads, super, imagine them to be a revelation rather than just stopping devices when I get the RS14s in.
Nick Jones Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Here you go: http://www.canleyclassics.com/?xhtml=xhtml/product/4potbrakes.html&xsl=product.xsl It's in the "new products" department. Cheers, F. Ah, thank you - blind then :B I'm not quite sure why they are £410 better than my 16Ps with expensive pads (and I could always space those and go vented). I shall be wearing out my DS2500s before doing anything else. Still plenty left. Can't see the discs being good for another set of pads after though Nick
Oracle Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I think if you shelled for the Pagid RS14 pads you'd find the braking a revelation, into a new world of precision, broad/progressive and constantly dependable. Probably something most of us have never experienced. But then maybe you'd find the same on the stock brakes using 170 £ pads. Agree on normal/cheap/supplied pads they don't do anything that the stock brakes don't do, bar have power and suddenly lock up all the time cause the pads have no feel. I've flatted my tyres alot when they suddenly grab on, comes from nowhere, youre braking with a chirp concentrating as there is no feel at all then they grab on. Plenty of power, no feel or control. Really scary in the damp ! Maybe not so much of an issue in a heavier car, mines all grabs. Its like building a performance engine and fitting a 10-50 cam in it and putting on a single 1 1/4SU. Few bonus'es of the kit are that without fail all the others use mount brackets made of butter, the AP calipers have 1inch thick integral lugs. The Discs are race-proven and made from top notch material (atleast genuine AP!). Performance ain't about thrift. Send back those SHIT pads and supply a "performance" kit with a performance pad. M1144 is the MIN requirement for any kind of performance braking.
Hurricane1500 Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 If I'm going to go for the the AP Caterham Caliper set up is my spit master cylinder man enough for the job or should I upgrade that too? Thanks Toby
Oracle Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 0.750 / 3/4" works fine, recommend a proper girling, forget any wilwood stuff, binned both of mine. Maybe find a nice AP one of the same bolt pattern?
