DougP Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Yeah that figures. They are going on at the weekend.....
DougP Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 All, In case anyone had similar doubts to me, I got the following email direct from Mintex. "M1144 is primarily a fast road product, in order to be legal for the road on vehicles produced after September 1999 it requires a Regulation 90 certificate, for vehicles produced before this time no certificate is required, hence these pads are fine for road use on your Spitfire." So there's no problem fitting these pads to our cars legally - which is nice. Cheers, Doug
martinholmesuk Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Dumb question maybe, Do these bolt onto the existing spitfire mounting hole? Or do you need those caterham type bits that canley sell :S cheers Martin
neilnaz Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Martin unless I am very much mistaken we are talking about brake pads. You change these by removing the locking pins and sliding in the new pads in place of the old. Usually you need to spread the calipers apart as you will be putting meaty (i.e. thicker new) pads in place of worn thinner pads. Neil
martinholmesuk Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Hi mate, on page 1 it's all about calipers :S
DaveNotSoSideways Posted March 8, 2008 Author Posted March 8, 2008 Caterham upright is the SAME as a Spitfire one, bar the lower stud/trunnion arrangement. It says Spitfire brake upgrades cause they fit rhe Spit
DougP Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 Mintex M1144 pads fitted this morning. After 50 miles running in they are quite simply fantastic compared with the £7 jobs I got from one of the usual suppliers. There is virtually no comparison. Cheap crap pads are simply a thing of the past for me now.
DaveNotSoSideways Posted March 15, 2008 Author Posted March 15, 2008 No need for 4 pots and vented discs anymore? Pads are more important than anything else! Glad they work for you!
DaveNotSoSideways Posted August 22, 2008 Author Posted August 22, 2008 http://www.compbrake.co.uk/Triumph%20Upright.htm One I stumbled on, never seen it before!
gt5r Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 http://www.compbrake.co.uk/Triumph%20Upright.htm One I stumbled on, never seen it before! off subject but blokes a wanker - I looked long and hard over 15 years to find a billet caliper that fits striaght to a GT6 upright using a 2.8 disc - bought a set of calipers and with 9mm machined off the spacer - could not get a better fit on the GT6 upright with a 2.8 disc - but no option for dust shields on the pistons. Tried to get an additional 4 shorter bolts off them as they are not an off the shelf length (thier stock caliper has 2 short and 2 long bolts) - must of caught him on a bad day - tosser - this could be my first rant!!!!! Anyway after my phone call I put the calipers striaght on fleebay and sold them - would never have any of thier products again Also be aware thier GT6/Vitesse alloy hubs do not fit correctly due the outer bearing not sitting in the same location as the OEM hub - market is Chaterhams and they think that it fits striaght onto the Triumph - you've been warned!!!!!
gt5r Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 off subject but blokes a wanker How did you do that ???? thats not what I wrote!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhh a censor!!!! so thats why
Nick Jones Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 So he's a complete knob jockey then....? ;D see if that sneaks through the censor........ Nick
DaveNotSoSideways Posted August 25, 2008 Author Posted August 25, 2008 15 years, he might dead now I know guys who have wrecked good businesses in half that time It's my favoured choice atm.
c20spit Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 i have to say that my high spec princess lug calipers with mintex 1144 pads and 2.8 capri discs on gt6 upright feel really good at the moment, obviously not tested on track yet but the peddle is really good( much better with good pads) and responsive
DaveNotSoSideways Posted August 26, 2008 Author Posted August 26, 2008 Spoke to the bloke Compbrake today, chatted for a while.
gt5r Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 Spoke to the bloke Compbrake today, chatted for a while. Won't be so helpful once he's got your money and you've a technical problem with supplied parts that don't fit!!!!!
booley Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Spoke to the bloke Compbrake today, chatted for a while. i exchanged a few emails with brent and stephen at compbrake concerning their gt6 kit, but now their website doesn't seem to be working.... doesn't give me much confidance, considering mark's(gt5r) comments....
DaveNotSoSideways Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 I think the caterham kit, is by far the best option. (proven) Now they have two 38.1mm pistons, pedal in my car is a ROCK, no play.
gt5r Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 i exchanged a few emails with brent and stephen at compbrake concerning their gt6 kit, but now their website doesn't seem to be working.... doesn't give me much confidance, considering mark's(gt5r) comments.... What they don't understand is that there are two different uprights/stub axles and hubs for Spitfire and GT6 - I even sent them a GT6 vertical link and hub to compare it against - got no joy as he was right all the time
booley Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 i have to say that my high spec princess lug calipers with mintex 1144 pads and 2.8 capri discs on gt6 upright feel really good at the moment, obviously not tested on track yet but the peddle is really good( much better with good pads) and responsive is this a fairly easy swap? and does it fit inside 13" wheels?
gt5r Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 The problem with this route using Princess callipers on a GT6 upright is that you have to use and machine a 1600 caliper carrier at its weakest point to fit the vented disc - I really don't like this mod and having used a set of Princess callipers on the track which I used once in practice and took them straight off as they were worse than the standard callipers. If its a Spitfire upright the Princess caliper will bolt striaght on - if you are using original Princess calipers they will need spacing as the Princess disc is not vented - you can actually machine the stock caliper and fit a vented disc without a spacer as this is what I did on my race car For GT6 you will be better off with a spaced standard set of callipers and a decent set of pads than the more common method of using the 1600 caliper carrier which I believe is to weak once machined (buts that just my opinion) and the Princess HI Specs You could investigate Subaru 4 pots - as I think you might find the Scooby's have the same mounting centres as the standard GT6 upright - It was something I was going to investigate but due to a complete suspension change at the front I never got around to it
DaveNotSoSideways Posted January 22, 2009 Author Posted January 22, 2009 Yes just use the stock GT6 calipers with a spacer. Good calipers! Pad material stops you, not the size of your calipers!
PeteClan Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I think the area of pad material also plays a large part. Pete Richards
DaveNotSoSideways Posted January 22, 2009 Author Posted January 22, 2009 M16/16P/16PB have a nice size pad, much larger than the Spitfire! Although my friends Ferrari 308 has the same sized pads as a SPITFIRE on the back?! Being mid engined I'd have expected something a bit larger?!
