DaveNotSoSideways Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Well 4 main options. Caterhams AP kit - Will possibly need an 0.825" Master Cylinder due to large bore pistons. https://www.caterhamparts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=111&products_id=93&osCsid=2659414aeaaa6c430bfc3b34c78c5c2e Good to GT6, big engined cars, cars with 6 cylinders or FULL RACE cars. -------------------------------------------------------------- Most interesting James Whiting Alcon Kit. http://www.jameswhiting.com/page9.html http://angus.zenfolio.com/p434475895/ This is more along the lines of use quality pads, discs and calipers and ditch the vented, quality kit, light weight, simple. To Quote James "James Whiting Sevens commissioned Alcon Components Ltd to manufacture 4 piston alloy race calipers to fit onto the standard upright and use the original disc without the need to modify front cycle wing stays. The piston sizes have been specifically chosen to ensure that brake Bite is improved and minimal extra pedal travel with the standard 0.7 master cylinder, hence there is no need to fit the 0.812 race spec. Version. Piston sizes are 38.1mm and 34.9mm, as opposed to 41.3mm and 38.1mm for the AP Caliper. The pad area has been increased by approximately 100% over the standard fitment, which reduces the temperature and lowers the risk of the pads going off. EBC Green Stuff material has been chosen for the kit after extensive testing and provides good all round performance for road and track. However, other grades are available if required. The Alcon Brake Kit was well and truely tested in 1999 when it was fitted to two Caterham Vauxhall race cars that competed in the A.D.A.C. 24 hour endurance race at the infamous Nurburgring Nordstriffe circuit. The cars were entered by Prosportif Ltd and finished 8th & 13th in class, 52nd & 83rd overall from 195 entrants. Both cars completed the race using ONE set of Pagit brake pads each" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Wilwood MidiLite Caliper and Vented Disc Kit. http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=562_563_574&products_id=10595 Solid conversion if not overly exciting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Moss-Europes Kit. http://www.moss-europe.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=3026 There are more basic kits available, but they will not be included here. You can use a large range of calipers on their own such as those from: http://www.hispecbrake.co.uk/calipers/ultralite_4.htm Look for Caterham LUG 232mm Disc. Can be spaced for vented discs or not. Also OUTLAW Calipers may fit.
RallyRob Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I like that Alcon setup...been looking to upgrade, now I know where.
DaveNotSoSideways Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 They're pretty expensive. However Alcon's are topdraw calipers.
James Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Of course you also have the option of something like HiSpec - which do calipers for both Princess and Caterham. Comes to about £400 incl pads. In fact they now do "economy" versions of their calipers - so you can effectively go for one step higher (Billet4 over the Ultralite4) for about the same prize. I don't know anyone with experience of running on a Spit/GT6 - but do know someone who has used the calipers - they work well.
bonsaiisuperstar Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Nice kits there. I wish I knew 5 years ago what I know now. My test runs so far have shown that the brakes are not "great" by any means. I like good stopping power, one of these kits may be for me ;D
PHOENIX Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 verry tempted, dont find it hard to stop iff all adjusted coectly, but thinking of upgrading pads at least.
DaveNotSoSideways Posted February 14, 2008 Author Posted February 14, 2008 Nice kits there. I wish I knew 5 years ago what I know now. My test runs so far have shown that the brakes are not "great" by any means. I like good stopping power, one of these kits may be for me ;D Try some really good pads first... Mintex/Pagid... You have the normal Spitfire calipers? There's hundred of options.
bonsaiisuperstar Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Yes, I have the standard Calipers and pads from Victora British.(I have learned that most of that stuff is not so high quality) Like I said, I have learned soo much over the last few months from your blog and all the others on this site. It took me a few years to find yas, but I found ya. You guys "get it" ;D
DaveNotSoSideways Posted February 14, 2008 Author Posted February 14, 2008 Try some Mintex 1144 pads... http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=562_1182_1194 The Caterham/Elan front calipers are the same...You can hunt for the Mintex in the USA by the part number MGB533 or 533. If you can get Hawk or Pagid road pads, worth a look... http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/BRAKE-PADS-PAGID/c468_469/p578/PAGID-FAST-ROAD-MGB533/product_info.html Again part is (MGB)533. Basically any cheapo pads from most suppliers are unbranded, and usually poor... Don't like EBC green, yellow, black either... Check the interchangeable parts section for a list of ALL the cars using the same pads as your Spitfire...Can order pads for about 25 cars they all fit.
PHOENIX Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 it doesent say if that is per pair per set or sigular?
AJ.Lintern Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I'd have assumed it would be a set of four pads as you're supposed to replace all pads at the same time.
PHOENIX Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 asumption is always dangerous. dont want to be wrong
DaveNotSoSideways Posted February 14, 2008 Author Posted February 14, 2008 Right more options!!! HAWK pads are the biz (so alot say) http://essexparts.com/CatalogPDF/Essex_01-09_Hawk.pdf HB118 for Spitfire comes in a load of grades...Fast Road, Sprint etc. HB169 for GT6-TR4-6 "" "" . http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/hawk_q-z.asp Enjoy.
bonsaiisuperstar Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 "Try some Mintex 1144 pads... http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=562_1182_1194 The Caterham/Elan front calipers are the same...You can hunt for the Mintex in the USA by the part number MGB533 or 533." Two questions.... 1. Will the Mintex 1144 bolt directly to stock Spitfire calipers? 2. If answer to question 1 is yes...is it a problem that I do not have vented or cross drilled rotors? (Mine are standard VB issue)
DaveNotSoSideways Posted February 15, 2008 Author Posted February 15, 2008 1, Yes...The Mintex MGB533 is a pad for about 20 cars, its the same as the Spitfire, drop straight in. 2, No...Use them on any disc/rotor.
bonsaiisuperstar Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Dave...you are awesome. Thanks for the info chap!
PHOENIX Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 and again dave. how are they sold? pair, set or intervidual?
PHOENIX Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 bought some with postage and vat man came to £41.21, in case anyone was interested.
PHOENIX Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 so should I swap from origional disks to groved or drilled for those pads realy? or still inprovement without? there ok at present with cheapos.
DaveNotSoSideways Posted February 17, 2008 Author Posted February 17, 2008 Grooved and drilled are a waste of money imo...
PHOENIX Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 fom you, I feal much better hearing that, so recomeded pads to upgrade the working great brakes ito working fantastic it is then.
DougP Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 1, Yes...The Mintex MGB533 is a pad for about 20 cars, its the same as the Spitfire, drop straight in. 2, No...Use them on any disc/rotor. Hi I've just had a set of MGB533 M1144 pads delivered. On the box the label statest "This material must not be used on public highways". Anyone know what the score is? I can't imaging build quality being an issue with Mintex stuff - is there asbestos in there or summit? Cheers Doug.
DaveNotSoSideways Posted February 27, 2008 Author Posted February 27, 2008 Its says that on any performance part, it saves the maker getting sued Its meaningless.
