Have just finished reading the article on wiring these alternators in, I'm having to go to the breakers with tape measure in hand to find one for a rover v8. Whilst i'm there, does anyone know what car to pinch one off for a herald? Or the rover come to think of it?

I just found a tiny onde waying only seven pounds!  Not what you want for a driver but just the thing to shave weight off the racer! ;D

I ordered the tiny one today, PM me for details...Steve 8)

Here's the half stone version compared to what I thought was a small one already.  Annoyingly, I just found a reference to a five pound version but it sells for $400.  Talk about diminishing returns! ;D

That's a nice tiny alternator!

That should knock down the weight a tad.

How much does the bigger one weigh?

I am surprised that you haven't drilled holes in that hefty alternator adjustment bracket to reduce weight there.

Best Regards

Steve,

I know we are all for saving weight on the racers but I remember having a converstaion with a leading Morgan racer who was waxing lyrical on saving weight by fitting a lightweight alternator at a cost of around £200+ when his wife pointed to his stomach and stated I think I know a cheaper way of saving that amount  of weight.

Ain't it the truth.

I got the same line when coveting an alloy water pump body at Jigsaw.

My good buddy Chuck is quoted for "Salad equals Speed"  ;D

Since the Technical Articles Section is closed I am going to add this here. Simple drawing of the spacer I used for the front plate.

It should.... 4 and 6 pot are similar in this area -  however,

1. I'm beginning to to get an appreciation for just how many pulley combinations there are for the 6 cyl.  This many not affect forward spacing of the alternator, but could well affect belt length.

2. The Triumph part for alternator equipped sixes looks alot like that drawing, so before getting carried away and making a new one, just take a look at what you have, might do the job with the help of a washer or two.

I believe that the six pot and four pot belt positions are slightly different (I am looking at a special damper for my 2.5 from James Shackford of TRE -"Shacktune) and he has had to space the crank pulley forward which entails using a spitfire waterpump pulley) - this implies a different rotational plane for the belt.

[/img]Volvo 240 alternator on modified gen. bracket. There are scores of them in the breakers and they use a v-belt. Most Jap cars have a flat ribbed belt. I didn't want to move the oil filter so the stock mount wouldn't work. Even tried the 4 cyl. mount. One wire for output one wire for charge light.
