For years I've been a massive fan of Mintex M1144 pads for the Spitfire, but they are now showing as superseded by MRM1802 has anyone got any experience of these?

What makes me worry is that they are shown as a replacement for M1144 and M1155 which were pretty different.

I'm from Yorkshire, so I don't want to spend close to £70 on a set of pads and find out they require too much heat or aren't much better than the standard ones.

From MIntex's own website: Racing Compounds – Mintex  "Replacing M1144 road applications MRM1801 is a new medium friction compound .... "

And "Replacing M1155 and some M1144 applications, MRM1802 is a new medium friction compound specifically developed for track day, circuit, rally and historic racing." [My underline]

I agree with you, but I'm still on a set of 1155s that are some way short of needing replacement.  There seems to be  1144 pads still in stock at dealers, so  you may be able to find some.

Ahhhh so I should be looking for NOS 1144 or MRM1801

Most of the places I looked at with 1144 on their websites were put of stock. Certainly the cheaper ones were.

Thanks John.

Are there? I’ve been hunting Vitesse/GT6 ones for a while…….

No personal experience yet but I’ve seen comments that the new replacement lacks the initial bite that make the 1144 so good.

That's a real shame, I really do rate the M1144 pads. I'll be gutted if the new ones aren't as good and I can't source any NOS ones.

Have they got stamped on them not for road use?

Says it on the box. Not on the pads. Barely any ID on the pads themselves and nothing that will survive long service.

Not sure why you would put that statement on the box when your own marketing puff says

Replacing M1144 road applications MRM1801 is a new medium friction compound specifically developed for performance road and light track day use.”?(my underline)

Has anyone actually found a source of MGB533 M1801 pads. (M1144 good too, I wish:pinch:)

Looking for a set for 1500 Spit and I’m only finding M1802 versions which are more akin to 1155?and ludicrously priced.

Just wanting a road pad with acceptable initial bite/pedal pressure. This is not delivered by the greased weetabix shite currently fitted, which are, frankly, scary.

Can't find M1801 anywhere, I'm stuck in analysis paralysis wondering whether to go for  MX4597 or M1802 compound Mintex pads.

M1802 are around £60 (£55+ postage from demon-thieves www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/brand/mintex/shop-by/vaa__vehicles_code/59171cb911ae2) a pair, given brake pad prices seem to have exploded that sort of seems on par with my expectations.

Yeah, I can find M1802. But I don’t want it. That’s more 1155/Ferodo DS2500. Not tried the 1155 but the Ferodo lacked the immediate bite from cold of the 1144, though excellent once warm.

Im wondering if Mintex even make the MGB533 pad in M1801 material.

Not sure what the MX4597 is, but if it’s their standard offering it falls into the greased weetabix category. It’s designed for cars with servos.

I always found 1155 a most versatile material!   I'm mostly racing with it, but I've driven to Le Mans as well as around the UK on public roads with them and never felt that  they  were slippery, even when cold.  Can't comment on Ferodo materials.

You could fit ford m16 calipers. I believe Mr Pearson has done that an mentioned someting about reducing the GT6 disc diameter a smidge (on a herald 13/60 IIRC)

I tried on my Vit1600, but without reducing disc diameter. Calipers wouldn't quite go on (so I made some caliper brackets to suit) but with some proper thought coud be a nice upgrade. I intend to fit Triumph type 16 calipers now Ihave some proper brackets (not an option on later spitfires)

Just use GT6/Vitesse uprights?

That works, but you then need the whole lot. The ford M16 calipers bolt up to the spitfire uprights, and the GT6/Vit discs fit to spit hubs. The only thing is how big the discs need to be. When I get the chance (ie possibly the spring) I will revisit this idea....

Might consider this for our other Spit still running type 14 calipers. All it really needs is decent pads though.

Yes, my assumption was for the whole lot as all the bits fit without modification. And you get the benefit of the larger GT6/Vit wheel bearings.

Hello All

For Spitty I just look for NOS ones that have asbestos in them!

The ones I have in Spitty now seem ok to me but then I am old and probably do not drive as fast as all of you but last year on the Alpine trip when coming down Bloody big mountains I could smell the brakes hot but pedal did not alter and they carried on stopping us ok'

The TR6 with 4 pot callipers had brake fade!!!! and the other TR6 also but he probaly has some modern rubbish in as he does not do his own servicing!

The ones in Spitty make the wheels very dirty and when checked last winter had plenty of life in them I just swopped the pads around in each calliper as one had a touch more wear than the other!
