Hi John,

It is surprising how many genuine 'trade' folk do not know much about products that are outside their daily routine.

I suspect it is not a scam

pleanty of people of working age were born long after the vitesse went out of production and may never have heard of them, the bonnet could have been on a herald when it came in to the breakers- also that 'vitesse' was used as a term on some rover 3500's to indicate the faster variant- (but it's still a rover 3500).

Also the average IQ is 100 and 50% of people are even stupider than that.

But it says "VITESSE", not "Herald!     In nice, clear, easy-to-read letters.

By definition an IQ of 100 is the 'average' , the mean, the median and the mode of the bell shaped curve of population IQs.   It equips you for "routine work under supervision".

Imagine a 20 year old who works in a breakers. He's never heard of a Herald or a Vitesse. A car comes in and the log book says Triumph Herald. The bonnet has a badge on it saying 'Vitesse'. You might reasonably assume that the car is a Herald Vittesse in the same way that when a golf comes in with 'GTI' on the grille you assume that its a 'Golf GTI' and not a Golf with a grille from a completely differnt car called a GTI.

All true.

And then he goes to sell it on ebay because that's his business model and obviously he wants to get as much for things he's sell as he can. Because it keeps him fed.

And being a 20 year old and used to getting every piece of knowledge off his phone he can either to a quick search to check what it is he's got and go 'hey Vitesse posh Herald, more money', or 'meh, can't be bothered'.

I drive past the yard occasionally (just off the M58).  Most 'stock' is modern, accident damaged, salvage (some high end).  They have a number of other Triumph parts listed, mainly doors and bumpers.  I'd be very surprised if that bonnet arrived attached to a vehicle.  More likely a garage clearance...

The last pic of the listing shows it attached to a complete and not obviously damaged convertible…. Odd. Flooded maybe. Though cars of that era are eminently recoverable from flooding….
