Ah yes Nick, you're correct.  I've just realised the setup I have dosn't have an ignitor and therefore a dumb coil, so I'd need a smart one, VAG ones with ignitors don't seem a lot though.  Also a quick search doesn't seem to show how you might replicate the PIP/SAW signal to the EDIS so maybe a vag coil needs to be costed up when comparing.  You can get a VR conditioner board as an adon from the DIY-EFI site, do you think I'm being optimistic to assume this will just work?

Hello All

I have used the VAG type coil pack from day one as it got rid of a bit inbeteen

This is with Microsquirt and it has been no problem in 33,000 miles other than this numpty not getting all the settings quite right(I can not stop tinkering!!)

I have not used a Bosch one a cheaper copy and carry a spare which cost about £10/15(tested in before packing in the boot)

Plus I reason that it it goes bad on one of our Spain etc trips I can always get one at the local car parts place next day?

Roger

ps speeduino is way above my pay scale but Microsquirt I can Just about understand on a Good day! and it has proved good in service so I suppose you get what you pay for?

I don’t think there’s any magic about the SAW signal to the EDIS - basically a single coil output. Whether the default settings are there in the Speeduino I don’t know. TheVR conditioning board Chris hot just worked. Was a bloody revelation after that poxy Hall sensor!

Here is some reading to help you decide between Speeduino and Mega/Microsquirt.

Home | Speeduino Manual

MegaSquirt(R) FAQ Main Page (megamanual.com)

The Megamanual is much more complete and there is some crossover with Speeduino so read them both if you go the Speeduino route.

I tried the Speeduino and it gave me fits. Then when I would ask a simple question on the help forum I was treated like a complete idiot. They are a bunch of arrogant computer geeks that like talking down to anyone who doesn't have a Ph.D.. in computer science. I had a misfire at 1800 Rpm that I couldn't get rid of. Also it would drop the connection with the laptop right in the middle of auto tune. Which led to my settings changing while I was miles from home.

I switched to MicroSquirt and the learning curve wasn't as steep. I got it to run well but my tired engine was the limiting factor. So its in the process of being rebuilt. My cylinders have 90K miles on them and my compression was really low.

I have a quick progress report for those interested.  Dad traced a (the?) fault in the megajolt to a cracked track on the board.  This might have been caused by the levels of violence required to remove an old MAX232 chip a while back.  With this track replaced by a short piece of wire last night I managed to flash a new firmware, and get live data on my laptop, all powered by a 9V battery.

It didn't work on my old PC PSU that was acting as a 12v power supply though, and didn't work when powered by the loom in the car either.  The suggestion is that maybe there's an earth issue with teh PSU and loom that the battery didn't have, so I've put together a series of tests that I'll try to employ this evening to further isolate this particular problem.  Seeing the megajolt talk to the laptop was rather more of a relief than I was expecting!

I've also been in touch with a local rolling road on Toby's advice who have a selection of SU needles.  I've got standard 1500 ABT needles in at present, a quick distillation of my internet search suggests a progression of: AAQ then something like AAL then AAM to give richer needles.  Garage will hopefully have suitable ones, and should be able to get me close enough to either take a punt on an improved profile (using the mintylamb compare-o-rama) or take the emery to a richer profile.
