egret Posted September 27, 2023 Posted September 27, 2023 Does anyone know how much of a headache it'll be to swap a 1500manifold and hs4s onto a mk3 FD engine? Is there a needle swap to get these to work?
Mark Posted September 27, 2023 Posted September 27, 2023 I've done it before, didn't change the needles. Can't remember clearly, but think there may have been some heater hose routing and throttle linkage to play with, but recall it as pretty straight forward. Don't think you will gain anything in performance, with just carb size increase alone over the standard hs2.
Mark Posted September 27, 2023 Posted September 27, 2023 Couple of photos from 2012. Cant remember if this was a mk 4 lump or the mk3 with a new pump and later fan, but shows the HS4s fitted. 1
Nick Jones Posted September 28, 2023 Posted September 28, 2023 Depends a bit what you are starting from and where you are going. They are basically a straight swap bar heater pipes and possibly throttle linkage. Needles depends on engine/exhaust/air filters. As Mark says, you may not notice much difference. Many years ago, when I had a fierce 1300 in my Herald, I tried 1x HS4 on a Dolly manifold, 2xHS2 and 2xHS4. The single actually worked best up to about 4.5k. 2x HS4s only really gave any gains over 6k. The engine made about 100bhp and would rev to Smiths. Also tried a borrowed pair of 40 Dellortos….. jetted for something even fiercer. Those were impressive but I couldn’t afford them or the fuel consumption.
egret Posted September 29, 2023 Author Posted September 29, 2023 This question was raised because I've seen an engine in eBay and in hopeful to do an engine swap. I.e. going from an overbored 1500 to a currently unknown fd1300. I'm going to look at it on Sunday, so hopefully it'll be a sound engine and a relatively straightforward swap. This is all happening because the current engine has wear on the crankshaft from thrust washer failure in the past, which means it now eats thrust washers pretty quickly! It seems like the consensus is that a little ingenuity should solve any issues, so I'm hopeful the engine is ok

It is likely to be skipped soon, unless somebody wants it....
Nick Jones Posted September 30, 2023 Posted September 30, 2023 Would seem a shame to skip a recoverable 1500 bottom end……. Not as common as they once were! 1
sparky_spit Posted September 30, 2023 Posted September 30, 2023 Hi Clive, I'd like to have that 1500 short engine/bottom end if that's ok?. I can ask Tristan to collect from you; he drives past your's most days as he goes to work from Lancing to in Brighton. Iv'e also emailed you as I "lost" this thread/post earlier on. Thanks, Mike
egret Posted October 1, 2023 Author Posted October 1, 2023 The 1300 looks good. It's sat in the back of my van waiting for some help to lift it out. So I have no need for the 1500, thanks zetecspit
