Fast Driver!

Fast Driver! (6/10)

  1. I've come across a nice solution to that in a couple of areas, but it takes time to implement. Some local authorities will grant planning applications for rural land to be used for housing, BUT each property then has a local work/occupancy condition as a covenant in the deeds - won't occupy the property for 40+ weeks of the year? Don't have a job within 20 miles of the property? Sorry - you can't buy it. But that doesn't really help the issue right here and now. It's also not water-tight with enforcement taking a lot of legal effort and cost in the event that a buyer chooses to simply ignore the covenant
  2. It's an interesting angle and not one I'd even thought about - good idea! The thing is, the current feed to the garage at the new house is p1ss poor, there's an old 2 way fuse box where I'd like a more modern consumer unit. So I'm faced with having to renew it all even if I just want to use compressor/power tools in confidence. Also... son is about to qualify as an electrician. I'd like to get a serious armoured cable run in direct from the meter box with a good isolator, then a 3 way consumer unit, a proper ring main and lighting set-up and a couple of 16A sockets for the welder and compressor. After all that I'll probably end up spending more then a gen set on materials alone. Illogical, but I have a bit of an OCD about this sort of thing
  3. I picked it over the other options because it went lower on the amps I'd need to rewire the garage before using it at the top end.
  4. Good to hear that Clive, I spent quite a bit of time agonizing over this one (used) and other new options (Parweld XTE 171C, SWP MIG 180 TURBO, R-Tech MIG180) - to me it's a big amount to spend, so I wanted to make the right choice, especially with so much panel work to do on the cars.
  5. I think the excessive premium is depressing the bids on these. Ex-college gear is mostly "light use" and reasonably well maintained. Not from the auction, but I recently got this via a dealer and it's ex-college from Castleford:
  6. If anyone is looking for a dozen or so lathes at a reasonable price (or sundry other engineering items...) https://bidonline.ncmauctions.co.uk/auctions/8848/ncm-au10953
  7. Thanks John, I might just pass on that experience! ;-)
  8. Funny how different marques/enthusiasms for cars vary in terms of the engagement. A long time ago I helped my dad restore and rebuild a pre-war Rover, with a small number of exceptions the owners/enthusiasts for that era of cars were a funny stand-offish bunch.
  9. I got 7.6m rolls (25ft) for about $45 per roll from Amazon. No idea if they are still available or at what price though.
  10. Gates Barricade for me too. I got some so called R9 from a "reputable" ebay seller and it was Absolute F**king Shit. (There's a clue in the bold letters...) which went porous within 6 months. If you know what lengths you need I have a couple of rolls of Gates (1/4" and 5/16") that I'm willing to sell by the meter for what I paid for it. Although I can't guarantee when I'd be able to send it - it's in my storage until about 90 miles away!
  11. My plan - once some of the chaos of moving house and then the urgent car related things are sorted - is to set all my electronics gear up in the study/work room and then work through the amps in particular measuring/checking all the electrolytics and using the scope to look for any issues on power supply outputs (ripple etc.). I'll probably (at the very least) clean any pots/switches as well. That could be months and months away though at the moment.
  12. At the moment I have... Sitting room set-up: Monitor Audio R300/MD speakers Marantz PM7001 Amplifier Denon DCD 835 CD Player Marantz TT275 Turntable Generic Bluetooth receiver plugged into the Aux In on the amp. And that leaves me with the following as a spare set for my work room / study: Bowers and Wilkins DM302 speakers Sony CDP-XE370 CD player Cambridge Audio Topaz AM1 Amplifier Another Generic Bluetooth receiver The only thing I'm really looking to swap/change at the moment is the turntable in the sitting room set-up. The Marantz sounds "ok" but is sort of flimsy and plasticy.
  13. I'll keep an eye out, I was planning on acquiring a Pioneer PL12D and then upgrading the vibration damping etc. and then sticking a decent cartridge + stylus in it. Cool, I'm not sure how I feel about adding a sub-woofer to the set-up. I'm probably going to have to upgrade the strength of my shelves though, my recently acquired Marantz amp and Denon CD player are like a pair of concrete blocks!
