Hot Shoe!

Hot Shoe! (7/10)

  1. Our last 2 new cars have been successively worse in terms on on-board systems and software quality. I wish we could go back to the car we had 6 or 7 years ago when stuff either worked or you could permanently disable them. Our previous Suzuki Vitara (21 plate) - lane departure warnings all over the place, emergency collision warnings randomly (although not when actually hit by another car), driver assist speed limit wrong more than it was right. Current Skoda (24 plate) - random issues with the touch-screen/sat-nav, lane departure damaging my wife's wrists (it's wrong and it tries to force you back in lane, but actually tries to drive you off the road or into on-coming traffic), random collision warnings. As somebody who works in the software world I can say it's all about cost. The more reliable you want the software the more it'll cost. Just look at Boeing saving money on the systems for the 737 max and how successful that wasn't. Next time we look to replace the car (probably 2027) I'll be advocating a low mileage 10yo base model without all the BS "driver aids" instead of new.
  2. The definition of a Freudian slip, it's when you say one thing and mean a mother.
  3. There's a special place in Hull reserved for the inventor of auto correct.
  4. Based on 2014 with my wife - I'd say totally "punishing", but 2023 with my mate Simon - he's a monster when it comes to organisation and ability to sleep in a moving car. Made the whole thing a lot more comfortable and enjoyable having somebody like that to co-drive with. I'd 100% do it again with him in the Spitfire if I could.
  5. Very jealous. I really enjoyed the 2023 event with a 2 person crew in the Spitfire, wish I could take part this year. Team of 3 isn't too bad, my advice is mostly pre-event. Open discussion (even if it's at the start or the drivers meeting) between all crew members to agree "ground rules". What's acceptable, what's not, who's bringing what with them etc. It's good for the vehicle owner to make it clear to the others in the crew how the car can be treated and what's not ok. Similarly - no driving tired, but all agree it's ok to step in without it becoming and argument. All that sort of thing. Final advice... don't forget to enjoy it! It's a great event.
  6. I find this version more to my musical tastes....
  7. Monster start @JohnD!
  8. herzlich willkommen!
  9. YouTube copyright strikes are a complete joke, worse than trying to get any kind of customer service from the rest of the google monstrosity.
  10. I went for racking style shelves and plastic packing cases and what felt like 1000 years sorting parts/tools/materials and labelling boxes. Despite all that effort I still buy parts that I already have. I went to put a set of Sierra brake calipers (spares for the trackerJack system on the front of the Dolomite) on the shelf, found a box, opened it, remembered the previous set I'd bought as spares. Now have 2 spare sets. DOH!
  11. I remember my first place that had a garage - somewhere to work on cars that's not in the rain etc. Once you've got it, you can't go back! Congratulations! I'd avoid propane heaters if possible - mine generated a HUGE amount of condensation.
  12. I don't think any part of the turntable is now the limiting factor now in terms of quality. My hearing/amp/speakers now lag behind in terms of quality.
  13. Cartridge is a Audio-Technica AT-VM95E According to Internet nerds what I have is a late 1990s/early 2000s model fitted with an RB300 tonearm
  14. Cartridge fitted, turntable levelled, tone arm setup... now testing with "Echos" by Pink Floyd. Sounds significantly better than my old turntable.
