  1. Wasn't just the Mercury capsule with an early GPS display, Voskhod (Vostok) had one too: Although, thinking on it, you probably don't need GPS for a stationary engine, a fixed globe/map with a pin stuck in it will do.
  2. I am so glad I don't have to contend with salted/gritted roads!
  3. Love the spanner. I've kept some of my old tools for just such a purpose.
  4. Bought two Unos but I'm thinking I might have to start with Dues, faster, stronger higher etc.
  5. Very interested, but let me crawl before I walk. I'll give reading data and lighting warning telltales a go first. followed by logging various parameters and then something a little more complex like a tablet app. One thought occurred to me as I read your post, "Bluetooth, between the Arduino and the tablet"? Have you explored BT and Arduinos? Cheers
  6. Sounds like you had a very good weekend, diff excepted. I guess using a locked diff is going to chew through tyres somewhat and promote a "little" understeer. I was really surprised when I found out that our premier racing class, the V8 Supercars, raced with locked diffs, they too play on some tight, twisty little circuits, seems to work for them. Cheers
  7. One step ahead of you this time, I have an SD card module on order along with a pair of Arduinos. Cheers
  8. Thank you. If I run into difficulty I'll chase you up. I've had some experience "cutting code" and from the examples I've already seen I don't think writing sketches for an Arduino will be beyond me but you never know. Cheers, James
  9. Guess I'll start playing with data capture and Arduinos. On a vaguely related matter, when I was drawing the instruments I wanted to use the font Jaeger/Trimuph used way back when. Seems it was never released as a font, or at least I couldn't find it if it was. I spent a week learning FontForge and imagining what the font may have looked like. Anyhoo, I now have a TrueType "Spitfire" font on my machine, my only problem is I can't get the descenders working properly for the lowercase letters. (see below) Lowercase "G" is complete but it's not generating it all, I've moved "j", "p", "q" and "y" up until I work out how to generate them properly. ......anyone out there had experience with FontForge???? Feel free to comment on the design ...... Oops, forgot to put the 6 in, no matter, the 9 is an upside down 6.
  10. Ian, when I first came across "Sideways" it was Chris' and Craig's build threads (amongst others) that convinced me to embark upon my own adventure, damn them both to hell! Well worth the read and, dare I say it, Wmpus' build on the the CT site. I've been sidetracked somewhat lately but the three accounts of their experiences are well worth a read if you're just starting out on a Triumph Spitfire/GT6 restoration/renovation. Don't be like me, learn from them and listen to their advice, and the advice others have to give, it's all well meant and, generally, very useful. Cheers James
  11. Well I'll be....... well done even if it all looks a little "Heath Robinson" for the moment. Prometheus would be proud!
  12. Been messing with a CNC router lately and to take best advantage of it I needed to learn a CAD package. Enter Fusion 360 from Autodesk (the AutoCAD people), best way to learn ....... do something useful with it. Hence the binnacle below. I think I'll be able to make it on my little machine. The instruments will be standard Toyota/Denso units, aluminium bezels, polycarbonate or acrylic "glass" and the faces will be white acrylic sprayed with a matt black paint and the router will engrave the numbers, symbols etc. revealing the white "substrate" which can be lit from behind. I'm yet to decide where to site the telltales, I could drill holes and insert "Triumph Jewels" but is that the best solution? Folks have mentioned Arduinos in several topics, strikes me I could use an arduino to control the telltales, indeed, why not light the whole dial with a different colour as a pre-determined event occurs. The Tacho turns red at 7500 RPM for example, similarly for high temperatures, low fuel etc. etc. Has anyone progressed a data capture project, seems pointless trying to reinvent the wheel. Cheers, James
  13. Nothing quite like learning from the experience of others. Regarding point 6, I can add that ripping leads off a battery can be an incredibly difficult thing to do when an engine is trying its damnedest to throw a rod, crunch a piston or drop a valve. Better make the "first firing" a "Melbourne Sideways Posse" open event, nothing like having a bunch of grinning spectators cheering the "birth" even if they weren't there for the conception or gestation.
  14. Tools! Precision tools, gage (gauge) blocks included. Talk about all your Christmases coming at once!
  15. Could it work???? http://www.banggood.com/5V-12V-ZVS-Induction-Heating-Power-Supply-Module-With-Coil-p-1015637.html?utmid=365
  16. I know you're from NZ but it's g'day or gidday. Apart from that, welcome, there's a good number of we antipodeans on the site.
  17. I have a CBS module, not plumbed in yet but it looks like a solid unit.
  18. Um, don't get me wrong here but wouldn't scarlet have suited better?
  19. "Say, Pooh, why aren’t you busy?†I said. "Because it’s a nice day," said Pooh. "Yes, but—-" "Why ruin it?" he said. "But you could be doing something Important," I said. "I am," said Pooh. "Oh? Doing what?" "Listening," he said. "Listening to what?" "To the birds. And that squirrel over there." "What are they saying?" I asked. "That it’s a nice day," said Pooh. "But you know that already," I said. "Yes, but it’s always good to hear that somebody else thinks so, too," he replied… - The Tao of Pooh, Benjamin Hoff 'Tis indeed a nice day, and, apparently, I'm as fit as a Mallee bull. Nothing untoward found, everything within normal ranges. Just one of those things .... now, about that Melbourne chapter meeting......
  20. ..... due to get quit warm on Saturday. It is on bended knees I give thanks to the Australian radio gods that they've seen fit not to play Crimbo songs/carols 24/7
  21. Good news, congratulations to you both.
  22. I'm up for it, once the investigations have finished!
  23. Thank you gents. Yes, still here and apparently unaffected. I'm still in the testing process, Carotid Doppler "ultrasound" today, all good. By the end of next week I will have had the full suite of test and the medicos and, hopefully, I will know more. Enough to make a differential diagnosis, make some kind of prognosis and start me on "the" pharmaceutical regimen. It's all a bit up in the air pro tem. The thinking is that the headache is musculoskeletal in origin, I'm just lucky the wife had me move some furniture, just a bit of serendipity! Must buy a lottery ticket, or maybe I've used up all my luck for the next little bit. I will be getting on with the car, there's more incentive now, I really want to enjoy it before "stuff" gets in the way and they want to de-license me. Cheers Edit: Always thought Cliff was wiser than they made out.
