The number of customers I have spoken to today who have said turn it off... delete it etc is worrying. I am beginning to wonder how sophisticated (or not) the app really is. Last time I got done for self isolation I think I was in an office next door to a colleague who tested positive but our phones were close to each other... but separated by a wall. I never saw the guy to speak to but the apps says go home, don't pass go, don't pick up £200 so that's it. On the positive side I do get out of taking my daughter for a driving lesson tomorrow morning so every cloud and all that :)

bugs on top of bugs... thats how it works isnt it?

Right thing to do. My sister used to work for a charity helping people like this and it’s a truly awful world for some.

Gone in for the repaint under the bonnet this morning so I expect several weeks of fantastic weather while the car is away. -
There are worse things in life to spend money on... perhaps not many but it’s better than some!

He was talking it could have been years in the making. He was going by the large area that was polished. He was of the opinion the fracture was pretty large and well established before the shaft failed... so perhaps for a road car the factor of safety is pretty high in terms of design numbers. he wanted to cut it up and stick it under his microscope. I am more interested in sticking it up on the wall as a trophy so didn’t let him cut it up. -

Thanks @rogerguzziall back together. New old shaft looks fine on a quick test drive. Need to speak to TD Fitchett and build up some new shafts. The works metallurgist had a good look at the failed shaft. He thinks there was a crack for a long time Looking at the area of failure that’s polished. He was impressed by how long the shaft hung on before the final fast fracture. The weld may have accelerated things. Will be replacing the other side for piece of mind. -

It’s a lot of cash but if you added up the price of all new parts to match those included so with the new inner hub, sensible trunnion bush solution, stronger bearings etc then it perhaps isn’t such a bad deal. Especially if you factor in the short run batch premium for machining etc. Just need a lottery win now. More chance of being struck by lightening -

They look the dogs whatsits. Reads like a lot of thought has gone into the design on the face of it. Hoping to catch up with out metallurgist at work tomorrow for him to pass judgement on my broken shaft. -

Interesting to look at good and bad. Thanks for sharing. -

Thankfully not, I decided to put a bit of load on it and twat it with a deadblow hammer and it popped off... with a bit of a bang. Flange looks good still. I decided it was a calculated risk as a spare flange. Not the best thing to do but have you seen how much it’s raining. I decided I am not leaving the house today. To wet! -

I was a bad boy and used my old puller to get the flange off... Shaft was a bit scored where the needle rollers run. -

Poor thing never stood a chance, never considered bending as well. I spoke to the guy I bought the car off. He told me he had bearings fail on that side in the past. Wonder if that did some damage? -

Thanks Nick. I am hoping it’s bad luck and perhaps that shaft has had some abuse in the last 40 years that perhaps was the cause. We have a metallurgist at work part time, I might try and grab him if he ever comes back to work in the office post Covid. -

Obviously the shaft is under a torsional load. I guess they are under a fair bit of tensile load... more than I imagined! 24 hours on and happy it wasn’t more serious. Has anyone ever had stronger shafts made. Do they fail often? What grade of steel are they? Trying to rationalise it. I used to run upgraded halfshafts for trialing on my defender made from 4340 steel. Also, those little bushes for the trunnion. They are a pain in the arse if you don’t mind my observation. -

In my wife’s mind it was a major moment but that’s because she drives a Honda Jazz :) -

Yep, fast country Lane. Thankfully nothing coming the other way when it failed. There was a dramatic moment. Mrs Radioactive wasn’t happy! -

I am no metallurgist but... looks like the PO tack welded the dust shield to the drive shaft and it looks to me like the failure started at that place... -

A bit to much negative camber me thinks... halfshaft snapped at the hub end. Bit of a 60mph moment! At least the sun is shining. -

Mounting on the old rad was cracked on one side and had failed completely on the other... Replaced with full width one.
