    • So, jumping foward to the present. The engine fiasco happen July time last year. After assessing the damage and everything else that I wanted to do, I basically just turned the garage light off and closed the door, not to return until early this year. I can't emphasise the frustration but what's done is done, lessons learned and all that.  Anyway, with the engine completly stripped in the corner of the garage on the stand, I began writing out the list of things that needed doing on the whiteboard, things that I wanted to improve/upgrade, repairs and general tidy ups on the car. ...... the list filled the whiteboard! Majority of the jobs ended up being inside the car, -Heater refurb, it's useless -dash top recover and demister vent replacement/ repair as the present ones are all bent and look terrible -speedo replacement, the current one never worked -fit inertia seatbelts -New parcel shelves and retrim dash rails -fit a radio and speakers, period look but ideally with some nice features -seat retrim and re foam( not going to happen, too much money and all trimmers hate the mk2 recliner) -Door refurb, check for rust inside the door and treat, sort out 1/4 light to body gap and glass to body seal gap, I can nearly fit my finger between the top of the glas and the seal on the car -Cut a boot board to go over the tank - Sort out slop in clutch pedal, clevis pin hole all ovaled, quite an easy repair actually - With all the centre trim out of the way, adjust the handbrake cable and at the wheels - Improve the current sunvisor brackets as they're a bit sloppy. -find a new/ better front bumper or rechrome the current one, it just let's the look of the car down. -better wipers! This pretty much covers 2/3 of the car. The remaining is all front end and engine bay etc. In addition to all the paint issues to rectify. The front suspension is far too sloppy and needs stiffer strings with adjustable shocks, everything else is all good.  Not exactly a small job. On top of that add on a full engine rebuild with performance upgrades, quite a lot of work. The last few things to track down in preparation for the engine build is a second hand 6 3 1 manifold and decide on a camshaft I'm a bit peeved as I had quite a few pictures of some of those jobs but they've been lost in the matrix unfortunately. I now have a replacement crankshaft courtesy of Nick, saving me once again. It's at the machine shop as we speak and will be supplied with tri metal bearings. Anyway, long post dragging on, there's quite a few nice upgrades that I'll be showing off shortly if I can find the pictures! Jacob

    • Well today I had cause to open the non-recycling bin. Jesus wept, the smell.... Apparently my wife had found a dead rat at the back of the garden (!) so she put it in a plastic bag and dumped the thing in the bin. Unfortunately she failed to tie the bag closed and said rat it now pretty ripe. Another two weeks before that bin gets emptied. I suspect the whole street will be smelling it by then.
    • PU insulation board is often open cell, so yes it does rather soak up resin if used in the finished part rather than as a sealed mould. PU pattern/tooling board is closed cell and significantly more expensive (order of 4 to 5 times the price). The other thing that you can do if using either polyurethane OR polystyrene foams to make a single use mould is to cover it with a flexible release film like the stuff used when making pre-preg carbon parts. It's impervious to both epoxy and polyester resins and is thin and stretchy and can be stuck to the outside of the mould with spray-tack adhesive. Best used on a male mould so the film finish is on the inside of the part. This video shows how although they are using carbon fibre/epoxy the process is the same for polyester/glass. https://www.easycomposites.co.uk/learning/mouldless-composites-laminating
    • Check the top right corner John, YouTube is logged out! Hence the random video choice...........
