There will be a reference point for the main machining on any casting/forging but putting it on a critical joint sealing face is counterintuitive all right.

With a little forethought it's not that difficult to put them somewhere less critical or use a hole that needs to be there anyway. 

But like I say with the original tiddly 800cc block it really didn't matter.

As an aside my Dad had one of the wee Standards for a while when we were stationed out in Aden. 

He picked us up in it when my Mum, little sister and I arrived for the first time on the RAF Britannia out from the UK.

This was the old days so being picked up at the airport meant he drove out and parked the car by the aircraft steps.
